Does anybody know a city or oblast in Ukraine that has a telephone code of either 977 or 978?

We are trying to locate on a map of Ukraine a very small village (of about 300 people where distant Ukrainian relatives live), and the only information we have apart the villiage being in "western Ukraine" is their city/oblast telephone code of 977 or 978.  We think that if we can learn the general geographic region (near a recognizable city) we might be able to further pinpoint the village thereafter.

I have tried to find a "city code map" of Ukraine online -- without any luck.

Any ideas?   Thank you.

97 is a mobile telephone carrier's code.
Conner, that's partial and irrelevant. Furthermore, according to your list, the FULL codes work for Brazil, Dominican Republic, Nepal and Norway, so that's hardly a meaningful source of info, and I'd assume the codes refer to a public network.

I'd say more relevant is www.countrycallingcodes.com/country.php?country=Ukraine, where nothing looks like the codes given by Journeyman.

So I'd guess we're on a rather wild-goose chase here, unless more specific information is provided :(.

Journey:

You need to check your codes. 097 and 098 are both mobile number prefixes in Ukraine. I've never seen a 977 or 978 + 7 more digits.

Pick and choose carefully among the advice offered and consider the source carefully. PM, Skype or email if you care to chat or discuss

Actually, we are fairly sure that the city code is accurate.  Also, as seems to be the case with a number of local exchanges in Ukraine, after the city code is dialed, the remaining land line number consists of only 6 digits, rather than 7 (as with most mobile phones and land lines a number of other cities, such as Kiev, etc.).

011-380-977-XXX-XXX.

Dialing that number actually works, and connects to residence there.  However, it might also be a party line.  So far, we have not been able to connect with the particular individuals we are trying to contact.

This could be a tough question to answer.

Journey:

My home phone to our Kyiv apartment is 3-8-044-XXX-XXXX with 044 being the "area code". The last number in your sequence is not being picked up. Just like in the states if you dial one too many digits it just ignores the last one.

Re: Ukraine city telephone code of 977 or 978 -- what city or oblast?

Journey:

My home phone to our Kyiv apartment is 3-8-044-XXX-XXXX with 044 being the "area code". The last number in your sequence is not being picked up. Just like in the states if you dial one too many digits it just ignores the last one.

Ed,

Thanks for your reply.  However, I'm not so sure that the 7-digit format for Kiev and other larger Ukrainian cities will also always apply to every other town.  For example, my wife's family lives in Sumy, and their local land line numbers there are always only 6 digits.  380-542-XX-XX-XX.   I do recall 7-digit land lines in the larger cities of Kiev, Odessa, and Dnepropetrovsk.   However, Sumy has only had 6-digit numbers since I first visited there in 2003.  I am fairly sure that I also noticed that in Poltava and other smaller cities also.

Therefore, I think it is entirely possible that the 6-digit format will also apply to a very rural area, including a village of only 300 people.

I'll look through Muddy's amazing list to see if that helps.  Muddy, I hope you didn't stay up all night typing in all those city codes.  If so, thanks!

Journeyman

I think he got them from www.brama.com/ukraine/citycode.html or www.ukraine.org/db/Citycodes.html ;).

I've added those links to the RWDpedia (www.russianwomendiscussion.com/mwiki/index.php?title=Telephone_Directories) for future reference, along with those for other major FSU countries.

Another reminder of the former and long friendship between Russia and the USA with Ukraine being one of Russia's subjects. When Ma Bell established phone service in Russia their exchange capacity in 1882 had room for 800 numbers and at the end of the year had managed to convince 26 households, all in Moscow, to try putting a telephone in their homes. At the end of year two, growth had swelled to 3,000+ Russian households.

I did a piece a few years back on the 100th anniversary of what is today the Moscow Telephone company. Ma Bell sold Russia's original phone company to a Danish/Swedish company in 1901. Denmark's King Christian IX was Tsar Nicholas II's maternal grandfather and the Tsar's cousin, Sweden's Princess Marie, was it's primary shareholder. A few years later the stock was sold to family and friends of the Tsar and it became a wholly owned Russian Telephone company.

How old are the numbers you have in question?

In 1968 Russian (and by virtue, Ukraine) made vast modifications, following the USA's 1955 example of dropping alpha numerics in favour of all numbers, and adopting city codes (we call ours area codes). Anything prior to 1968 would be a long shot in the dark at best.

In the early 2000's, Russia and it's former republics committed to global compability--a standardization by which all systems can "talk" to each other by means of automation. That mean a further restructuring of phone numbers across the FSU. It could be that those numbers simply no longer exist, or in the words of that annoying pre recorded announcement, "we're sorry, but this number is no longer assigned or is in a different area."  Literally. Maybe even in a different country given changing boundaries.

The first step in global compability was 10 digit standardization. FSU numbers could have been 7, 8, 9 or 10 letters. So over time numbers have been changing. Russia is ahead of most of the other FSU in making the changes and most of the others aren't too far behind.

Perhaps knowing how FSU numbers work may help you understand how to trace them. We'll use Russia as an example since they modernized ahead of their neighbors. Large cities in Russia have 3 digit "city codes" and 7 digit local numbers just like the USA for example. Thus a Moscow number could look like this: 7 495 123-45-67. As you notice FSU numbers are grouped by two's starting from the right. An odd number remaining on the left is stuck with the two closest to it. So, 7 is Russia's international code followed by ten digits of which three are the city code (495) and then 7 local digits.

In general (cause there's always an exception) medium sized cities are assigned a 4 digit city code and 6 local numbers and small towns are given 5 digit region codes and 5 digit local numbers. All adding up to 10.

If the numbers you have don't fit in Ukraine, don't despair just yet. The boundaries of Ukraine are very different from even the recent past. Moldova, a Soviet creation, was carved out of other republics with a large chunk coming out of Ukraine. Part of today's Russia was yesterday's Ukraine and part of today's Ukraine was yesterday's Poland. Cast your nets a little wider and see what happens.

Finally, one of the best places to begin a search for long list relatives could by thru the many Jewish genealogy groups who work to trace the hundreds of thousands of lost Ukrainian Jews during and then following the war years. Their data can be extensive, covering more than just ethnic Jews. Do a Google or 2 and they'll appear.

Good luck!

Thanks for that explanation Mendeleyev. I remember something about 6 digit numbers in the provincial towns a couple of years ago. When I first glanced at Journey's display it was late and I thought there were seven X's there. The thing is that now the 097 and 098 numbers that the expat community and I are aware of were all cell phones. I know 098 is Kievstar and think 097 is also.

That sounds correct, Ed.

A decade or so ago when cell service begin to take off in the FSU there were debates on whether these numbers should be inlays or overlays and while I can write a media story and get away with it, I'm no expert on phone technology and I think that the overlay theory (simply adding new area codes over top existing service) won the day because it meant more roaming and more money for the telephone services.
