Shipping small package to Ukraine?
« on: June 14, 2009, 12:37:26 PM »
Hi everyone...and thanks in advance for your advice.

I'd like to send a small box with toys and small gifts to a woman in Ukraine.  Any advice on the best way to get it from here to Kharkov, Ukraine as reliably as possible?

I have always sent packages by mail, insured, with no problems.  The woman may need to pay a duty, depending on what is in the package.

Some people send by couriers, such as Meest, but I haven't found their service very add on.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

USPS.  Priority Mail International.   Declare it as a gift on the Customs form, value less than $100.

I'd suggest going with Meest if it is something that doesn't have to be there in a real hurry. For the cost of what the USPS wants to send a small box, I can send a very large box of stuff. Typically takes 2-4 weeks and absolutely no customs hassles.

I used to send stuff to my in-laws all the time via Meest. Go to www.meest.net and check out their locations.
Take time to learn the language. Even a little can go a long ways...

Get off your butt and go! Don't make excuses why you can't do it, find a way to make it work! Always go with a backup plan too!!!

USPS or DHL - those would be your two best options. DHL has a contract to get stuff into the US and NA from their system but don't know if they can still pick up stuff here for delivery there.
Pick and choose carefully among the advice offered and consider the source carefully. PM, Skype or email if you care to chat or discuss

You didn't mention where exactly here is but, if it's  the US, USPS priority as mentioned above is both, the surest and quickest, bang for the buck. You can (maybe) get a speedier delivery using a private courier for a much higher cost but probably not. There are a few threads on this subject elsewhere on the forum. There are a few things you should know in preparing the package and also the declaration. There were good ideas there. You should read up.
