Married in Kharkov
« on: June 25, 2009, 02:56:22 AM »
I have been reading a couple of the trip reports on here and thought I would write something about myself as three weeks ago, I got married!

Background.... i'm 31 and from the UK. My wife is 25 and from Kharkov. I met her through Mila the Interpreter on my 7th trip to Ukraine. Prior to that I spent 4 trips chasing after a girl from Kiev and then 3 other trips dating some others either from Kiev or Kharkov with limited or no success.

My 7th trip was obviously the breakthrough one. On this one I decided to try something really different, because up to then I had only met women I had arranged to meet myself via emails or through dating agencies (I would call them marriage agencies, but in 2009 I think it would be better to refer to them as dating agencies because i'm not sure quite how many people they actually manage to get married, few I imagine). On this occasion, I decided to try hiring an interpreter and trying to use the local ad system. From doing some research, Mila seemed the best and least expensive option. So I chatted to her via Skype and told her what I was seeking.

Mila told me that she already knew some women who in addition to the ad she could introduce me too. She sent me a few photos of these women and asked me if I was interested in any of them. One I certainly was and she turned out to become my wife.

So anyway, in November 2008 I made my way to Kharkov from London finally arriving at about 10pm local time. Mila then met me at the airport and then took me to the apartment she had organised for me. This cost $60 and was near to McDonalds and the metro and about 15 minutes walk to the Lenin statue. Ideal - centre of the town location.

In the past as previously stated I had gone to Ukraine to meet usually 1 or 2 planned people, with a back plan to use the agencies if it didn't work out. On this occasion I decided to try and meet as many people as possible, so with Mila, we pretty much lined up to meet 3 girls a day for the first few days of my week long trip. So Thursday afternoon I began a bit of a dating marathon. My then future wife, Yevgeniya, was the person I most wanted to meet, but Mila told me she was not free until the weekend, so until that time I met some others. These girls ranged from 20-30 years old. In my opinion, most of them were very different to the type of girls who I had previously met, in that they were much more genuine. Agency women on the other hand are so used to the attention, that they just see you as another free meal.

One or two of them I liked, although there was something about each of them that was not quite right for me. By Sunday afternoon I was then feeling quite fatigued by it all. I had by then met 10 women telling all of them what I do, where I live, what hobbies I have and what my plans are in the future without really clicking with any of them. But then I got to meet the woman who would become my wife and everything changed.

I won't go on and on about how great she is, as that’s between me and her and possibly not something which everyone wants to read. Needless to say we had so much in common (even supporting the same football team) and got on so well. With her speaking English, I arranged to meet her again the following evening this time without Mila being present. After her work she took me to her favourite restaurant.
I then explained to Yevgeniya that the next day was my last day before I had to return home. She then made some phone calls to her boss and managed to get the day off. I then met up with her again at 1200. We then spent a great day. The next few hours flew by and before I knew it, it was 2330 and we both had to part for early starts the next day (me to fly home, her to go to work).

And then it was all over. Back on my own. We then kept in contact over the next few weeks through Skype. Fortunately she has in her apartment a DSL internet connection and webcam making life much easier.

In January 09 I then returned to Kharkov for 2 weeks, fell in love and asked her to marry me. She said yes. In April I then went back for a further week and then earlier this month I returned for 2 more weeks getting married to her in the process. The wedding itself was amazing with members of our families traveling from all over the world to be there. Now we are getting her papers and documents together for the visa. A few bribes paid here and a few bribes paid there and we have at least managed to get her passports changed into my last name so that hopefully she will be able to get a visa in enter the UK in the next couple of weeks.

I thought I would write this positive story as there is so much negativity out there. I have now done it and get to join the lucky camp. But believe me I have done my grafting and had my fair share of heartache, dating disasters and agency rip-offs, spending thousands of pounds in the process. Still, it’s now all been worth it as I am married to a gorgeous woman who loves me very much so it can happen.

Finally, I would like to say a big thanks to Mila, as without her I would not have met my super wife. I have seen a couple of users of this site have written some negative things about her and their experiences with her services, so I thought in the interest of fairness I thought I would share mine. Hope this helps. if anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask.

Congratulations, ukguy. I hope you'll stick around and share some of the lessons you learned along the way.

By Sunday afternoon I was then feeling quite fatigued by it all. I had by then met 10 women telling all of them what I do, where I live, what hobbies I have and what my plans are in the future without really clicking with any of them. But then I got to meet the woman who would become my wife and everything changed.

I empathize 100%. Some of the other married guys enjoyed the chase, for me I'm happy that part is finished.

Hello UKguy1977.  I have just returned from Ukraine and spent all but one weekend with Mila in Kharkov. I was there from June 5 through June 22.  When we were sitting in a restaurant across the street from the Shevchenko monument, Mila saw a young woman walk by on the sidewalk.  She stopped the conversation and told the table, "I know that girl (or GURRRRRRL as she pronounces it).  She is marrying one of my clients."   She told me that she is so very happy.  So I suppose me being six thousand miles from home is a bit of a coincidence since I was in the same city as you at the same time when you got married.  I will say that in the three weeks I was there, there was no shortage of weddings being celebrated in the park. I guess yours was one of them and the big "Our-ah!" from one of the crowds that we heard a few days later might have been your wedding.  It sounded like a Red Army charge.  Glad you had success with Mila.  She is a wonderful person and I could not have been more pleased with her service and advice.  Congratulations to you and your new bride.
