I know I shouldn't do this, and, really, I apologize in advance for reawakening this thread (even with the 99.9% feeling this story is a bit twisted beyond the realm of reality)

Um, what happened? is the guy back in the states yet?

The reality is - you will have no luck to reach this guy on his cell/mobile phone in Ukraine.  One must purchase a special SIM card from one of the local cellular companies (Kievstar, Jeans, UMC) and these will not work in an american based phone unless it has been hacked/unlocked.  And even then, it will not have the same number; it will have a Ukraine number so you will not know it ,unless, when he dons the pantyhose, it also unlocks some primordial essence of telepathy.  Well, look on the bright side, at least he won't be able to sneak around with any Silent But Deadlies because his shoes would fly off.

I would guess the cost of global roaming services are a bit beyond his means and also are not very reliable in many areas of Ukraine. If fact, I never could get a signal on mine at all, anywhere.  I had to ditch the global and bought a decent little Nokia for about $40USD (200 Hrivna) that will work in any Eastern European country simply by swapping SIM cards.

I'm pretty sure your friend has taken this route or has no mobile service at all.

I haven't the years of experience of some of the others here (only 1.5 years, two visits to Ukraine completed, one to Russia scheduled for March). But even so, this has got to be the absolute weirdest story I've heard thus far...

Is fact really stranger than fiction?  I kinda doubt it, but really, like looking at a train wreck, I gotta know what happened.

Yes, my friend is back into the States now. In fact, L will be visiting my friend Eric for his birthday (which means I fly to NYC in late May). Looks very interesting but this is definitely the subject of a book.

Actually, when this girl visits Alfie and his emotionally disturbed buddy I'm confident she'll run a thousand miles.  She doesn't sound like an idiot so may it will end up a comedy when these guys realise they're living in fantasy.

Alfie,  I have one serious question for you though... This girl is visiting "The Freak" for his birthday???  Is she paying for her trip is is she financing it independently?  Maybe something through her work???  I'd be interesting in how the trip is funded and where she'll stay while she's visiting him for his birthday.
