I am surprised....
« on: January 19, 2010, 07:32:00 PM »
I am surprised there has been no talk of the election.  Talk that won't end up in an angry discussion of course...  Politics can be discussed calmly and with tact.  Though I admit in some ways it is a lost art.

So with that as an intro... Any views, any opinions out there... especially from Ukrainians and/or those that love them?

Hey... I take a lot of heat here because of my hair!  (Just kidding, no offense taken)  Oh crap... do I put the period inside the parenthesis or outside of it....  Ah better just to skip it.

I did read part of it.  And I see what you mean about the cry.  But I think I will read all of it.  It seems like it might be a learning experience.  More about the forum dynamics than anything else.  Okay, I admit I cheated and skimmed until the last few pages.

Outside.  Don't confuse it with a quote mark :-)

But at least with your hair you can get the gig as Jesus in "Godspell," the next play at the Tampa Performing Arts Center :-)

It can't be. Gothman has surely ended his pathetic, miserable life by now...he talked about it soooo much))) Ok, only once that I recall but really there's a world of difference between that manic depressive, suicidal sad excuse of a human being and Seeker who seems well adjusted and....well, well adjusted:)

Relatives are kinda embarrassed that an ex-con got the most votes!

Yeah, that is what I am hearing.  I think the hope now is that the opposition will unite.  Okay... it is a long shot.  The problem is just like here, many people decided not to vote.

Our 2.5 party system is much easier to figure out.  Fewer debts and backroom deals.  Not better, just easier with fewer players and alliances.

Thank you.  From you that means something to me.  And I am not being sarcastic unless you are.  :)

And we don't have a 2.5 party system. We have a 1 party system and the party ends in disaster.

Seemed to be the status quo was much better.  But not to the people of Ukraine!
Now, it seems all choices are bad :-(

I actually like your flipant way of saying it.  There is a grain of truth in what you say, and you say it with humor.

But it is a 2.5 party system.  For most people in the US it is "Those I like, those I don't, and those I do not know *snip* about."  And we still really know nothing about any of them.  Remember, we are talking about the US media and the people that believe in it at this point.  Think how harder it is to sort out in Ukraine.

It worries me that this seems to almost be a repeat of something that happened years ago.  I have my preference.  But of course I am just an observer.  My vote only counts in my head.

The reality is Ukraine has to have good relations with Russia.  They share borders, and a common history.

Ukraine has third rate politicians because most Ukrainians who were the "cream of the crop" moved to Moscow after the collapse of the USSR, a process which has accelerated since Kuchma left office.  All the current crop were mid level party bureaucrats before the collapse of the Soviet Union.  They have shown their true faces now that they are unleashed.

Yanukovich may be a criminal, but so is Tymoshenko, and so is Yushchenko.  The latter has even stolen antiquities from museums to add to his "private collection", which is now sitting in Chicago.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

My hope is that there be good relations with the east and the west, without compromise of the Ukrainian people.

It is sort of how we vote here, the lesser of two (or three) evils.  Not the best answer, but sometimes it is all we have.

Your politicians are angels compared to Ukrainian politicians.   While the US system is not perfect, crooked politicians do go to jail.

My MIL lived through a lot.  She lived in Kyiv during the occupation, survived the starvation and poverty after the war, and she has never seen anything like what is happening now.  The levels of corruption would leave you speechless.
