If it were up to me, people would be allowed to hunt only sharks and crocodiles. For hunting anything else - off with the balls! Evil bastards

Are you a vegetarian, Aloe?

No. Hunters don't hunt for food, they hunt for fun.

Most hunters I know do hunt for food.  Plus, they enjoy being out in nature.

I think anyone who eats meat has no right to criticize hunters.  Most animals killed by hunters suffer a lot less than farmed animals who are slaughtered for food.  Cows, for example, know when they are being led to the slaughterhouse.

With that logic, anyone who uses a car or a PC has no right to critisize others(factories and what not) for polluting the atmosphere. And since we all use cars and PC's, we should all just shut up and let them pollute the atmosphere, cuz we are doing the same.

No. I just feel bad for poor little (and big) animals being shot down in thousands, purely for entertainment of some bastards with a gun.

If  you drive a car, which causes pollution, you are part of the problem, and shouldn't criticize factories.  It is hypocritical.

Believe me, Aloe, animals that are slaughtered for mass meat consumption suffer just as much, and more often than not, a lot more, than hunted animals.

Most hunters I know do hunt for food.

I didn't realize nourishment was seasonal. Shark fin is a great delicacy in Asia, Does that justify catching sharks to cut off their fins and throw them back to the ocean, whether it's commercial and by private fishermen?

Plus, they enjoy being out in nature.

Killing defenseless animals can hardly be termed enjoying nature. Now give man a 12" blade, heck give him a machete with no provisions, then leave him in grizzly bear country and let him fend for himself - naturally - THAT, is my definition of enjoying and being one with nature. Carrying a high caliber rifle and hiding in dark corners to shoot unsuspecting animals can hardly be termed ' enjoying nature'.

How the heck do you know that, Boethius? Have you been shot by a high powered rifle and tried to run for a few hours and be tracked or chased down by dogs while bleeding to death? Ever seen an animals shot with a bow and arrow and lived for almost a full day before getting tracked? You think there was no suffering there?

Aloe, tigers and leopards are not hunted.  They are disappearing because their habitat is disappearing.

GQ, most hunted animals go out quickly.  They usually don't know what hit them.  Slaughterhouse animals do not.  Have you ever heard the braying of a cow as it is being lead to slaughter?  Or seen as pig shake before it is killed?  As for shark fins, that's not done by hunters, most of whom are conservationists, but by commerical fishermen.  So, anyone who eats shark fin soup is responsible for that slaughter.

The bottom line is, unless one is a complete vegetarian who also wears no animal products (no leather shoes/belts/purses/wallets) and uses no animal by-products, as are commonly found in cosmetics, pet food, vitamins, and prepared foods, it is hypocritical to make any sweeping pronouncements about hunters or hunting.

Sharks and Crocs are just doing what comes naturally to them. Do you like Lions? Ever see how they "survive?"

A couple weeks ago I was outside pulling some weeds. My daughter saw me and starts yelling "Stop it daddy!" I asked her why and she said "God made them." I told her "God made ants too." To which she replied "I hate ants!" and went back to stomping ants while I pulled weeds....

Your hubby must enjoy hunting that's why you're feverishly justifying shooting defenseless animals.

We're in the midst of this conversion (vegetarian). My wife thinks she can do it easier than I can. We read that an avergae person is responsible for the equivalance of  80 whole chickens, 2 pigs, 1/4 cow, 300 fish, etc-etc-etc..annually, etc...that's a lot of meat.

Now for your rather weak argument. It isn't hypocritical to have a conscience. You can justify being the one 'pulling the trigger' to be as dirty as any other anytime you want but I can honestly say *I* didn't decide to end a life for the sheer 'fun' of it.

Hunters don't do it for food, hunters do it for 'fun'. You can admit that or not, it doesn't make a whole lot of difference to me. You do whatever makes you feel better about yourself.

But to say you kill defenseless animals to enjoy nature and for food is what I define a hypocrite.

Wrong.  For the past 30 years, he has been a vegetarian who doesn't eat meat, fish, or eggs.  Nor does he hunt.  Nor do I.

Why?  That meat doesn't have the hormones shot into the meat you eat, nor the adrenaline, as a clean killed animal often doesn't know it is being stalked.

Boethius-

We simply differ with this subject, is all. You are so locked up in the notion hunters do it for food and nature enjoyment. Hunters, AFAIK, do it for cheap thrills and empowerment.

As for the picture you posted, yes that is nature in it's purest form. Predators will spot and consume the weakest of the lot. That's balance.

GQ,  not a hunter myself but there are most definitely some people who do hunt to put food on the table.  In Northern New England it's very common for people to go hunting and although they may think of it as a tradition or sport--they really do need to put some meat on the table and look forward to hunting.  Many are pretty simple folks with pretty simple weapons.

I do think it's kind of silly that some "sport hunters" need thousands of dollars of guns, scopes, precise optics, night and infared binoculars, ammo and spotters to shoot a deer.  No "sport" there.

Of course the animals feel pain unless it's a single head or heart shot with the right caliber ammo.  Most hunters need more than 1 shot to bring down the animal.

yada, yada, GQ. Your statements as quoted are absolutely wrong and show you clearly do not know what you are talking about.

It would be easy enough to make your statement correct by adding a few additional words, one such word as "some", but as you have written it you are 100% incorrect.

I have never shot anything I would not eat, I have never shot anything I did not eat.
98% of the hunters I know hunt FOR FOOD.   And their are many, many people/families in this country, in Arkansas, Mississsippi, Kentucky are great examples, where their are people/families who hunt during the short time period they have in hopes of being able to find enough game/food that will take them through the coming year.
