I do think it's kind of silly that some "sport hunters" need thousands of dollars of guns, scopes, precise optics, night and infared binoculars, ammo and spotters to shoot a deer.  No "sport" there.

Why? If those things help reduce the agony of an animal being hunted then it's a good thing, besides, it stimulates the economy :)

Why do golfers need thousands of dollars worth of new clubs, clothes, lessons and such when a cheap set of used clubs off e-bay will kill the same bird and have a smaller carbon footprint?

Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else :)

Tim-

I have no doubt there are folks out there who 'kill' for the sake of sustenance, some even for survival. Native Americans had done these for eons. But these are discriminant. Even animals themselves teach their young who, which, and how to kill efficienty.

Folks eat meat, fine. There are ways to domesticate and kill animals humanely. But when folks try and tell you they'll spend thousands of dollars for weaponry under the guise of killing for food and nature enjoyment, that's just silly to me. How much does an average 'hunting trip' cost these days? $ 500.00, maybe $1-2,000.00? Plus the cost of equipment and accessesories...

Do they realize exactly how much 'food' will that buy from their local neigborhood grocery store? Cut-up and cleaned, too. Heck, our society is so kosher these days you will even get selections from different classifications such as, organic, wild, farm-raised, etc... Venison? no problem. Wild venison? no problem.

That said...yes, sport hunters kill for the sake of cheap thrills and self-empowerment.

Anyway, no big deal...wandered off far off topic.

It would be easy enough to make your statement correct by adding a few additional words, one such word as "some", but as you have written it you are 100% incorrect.

Aww, getoffit, Jack!

I will bet you you have at least 3 grocery store within 20 miles of where you live. Spare me these silly 'I hunt for food' crappola...

You boyz are so freakin' predictable...

I bet your response will be, 'Yeah, but where's the fun in that?'  :rolleyes2:

Boethius-

We simply differ with this subject, is all. You are so locked up in the notion hunters do it for food and nature enjoyment. Hunters, AFAIK, do it for cheap thrills and empowerment.

As for the picture you posted, yes that is nature in it's purest form. Predators will spot and consume the weakest of the lot. That's balance.

Remember Timothy Treadwell.

FWIW, here in Norway, people can hunt during hunting season. To hunt Elk (Moose is you like), they need to belong to a hunting team, tested and licensed. Do the hunters enjoy the stalk and the kill? Probably. Do they eat the meat? Most certainly and it's quite prized too as there are only a limited number of animals taken because of quotas. If I were dumb enough to believe in reincarnation and I had to choose between coming back as a fenced in farm animal or a wild one, I know which one I'd want to be even with the risk of being hunted.

Seriously, as omnivores we eat meat. We used to beat animals to a bloody pulp with blunt instruments not that many 1000s of years ago before eating them. Hunting them now is humane by comparison and certainly more so than the conditions animals are kept in at factory farms. Guilt ridden self flagellating meat eaters should either accept that we kill things to get it or stop eating it altogether.

GQ, I like my own sausage, my own jerky. I prefer my own to anything I can buy at some store. Period!

I KNOW of families in Arkansas who hunt to provide food for their family.  Many of these people cannot afford the cost of beef at grocery stores and as such survive all year long from the hog's and deer they are allowed to take by the state.  Many families even have their children hunting at an early age. Some schools in Arkansas actually close for the beginning of deer season, it is taken that serious.

For you to say that hunters DON'T do it for food,  for you to say hunters do it for cheap thrills, AGAIN shows you are saying something you know nothing about.

I have never shot anything I would not eat, I have never shot anything I did not eat.
98% of the hunters I know hunt FOR FOOD.

Oh, and another thing  :P It is statement like this that make arguments like yours incredibly silly (I really want to use the word stupid, but I won't out of decency, LOL).

98%? WTF. Unless you know 100 hunters, then 98 of them are like you. But if you know only 10, then you're in trouble - 5, 12, 20, 40?

You would've have been better served had you used '100%'. But I know you won't because that would directly run parallel with mine (all) which is what you were trying to refute in the first place. LOL.

GQ, I would say I know and have known about 150 hunters.  Of this group I know of only two men who hunted for the sport, who hunted not for the meat, which was the last time I hunted with these two by the way.

So again GQ, when you write that hunters DON'T do it for food, for you to say hunters do it for cheap thrills, AGAIN shows you are saying something you know nothing about.

How hilariously ironic is that post? You can't even equate simple math.

2 out of 150 does not equate to 98%. Now do you understand how I find your statement I hunt for food banter as silly as your 98%?

When your prime rebuttal point is faulty at best, the rest of your argument becomes questionable.

It was just a rough, quick estimate GQ.  Was not menat to be an exact figure.  Based on my own personal experience with hunters I know and have met, a figure "CLOSE TO" 150, maybe 140, maybe 160 hunters.  Of the approx. 150 hunters I know, ONLY two have hunted for the sport, not for the food.

LOL...Jack, isn't one embarassment a day enough for you, or do you want to take another stab and explain your fuzzy math?

You may 'eat' the meat you hunted, but to say it is WHY you exclusively do it for, is untrue and silly. Now which part of THIS are you struggling to comprehend? If 'hunting' is as boring as watching grass grow - it will not have NEARLY the popularity it has today.

Go eat your sausage, Jack. It's time..

I expressed to you my OWN personal experience in that 98% of the hunters I know and have met hunt for food and not for the cheap thrill has you have stated.

I understand enough about the English language to KNOW that you are mistaken in the above statements that YOU wrote.   I understand that you cannot admit you are wrong, a lot of people can see that, and it has nothing to do with my understanding of English.

'extracted'

3 hunters stopped at a hotel for the night. The sign said "Vacancy. Rooms at $30.00/night". Each hunter pulled a $10 bill from their pockets and gave it to the bell boy to pay for the room. The bell boy takes the money and walks over to the counter and tried to pay for the room.

The person at the counter said, 'We're having a special today and the room is only $25.00/night.". So he takes the 3 $10 bills and gave back five $1 bills to the bell boy. The bell boy keeps $2.00 for his 'tip' and gave each hunter $1.00 back. So each of the 3 hunters paid $9.00 ($10.00 and a dollar back). That's 3 x $9.00 is $27.00 PLUS the $2.00 the bell boy kept as 'tip' is $29.00. What happened to the last dollar?

In Northern New England I know that some years deer multiply at an incredible rate as counted by the state's wildlife bureau's.  The concept from wildlife experts is to cull the herd and hunting does help to control excess populations.  Limited hunting seasons are then allowed in the late fall.  There is a finite amount of food in the deer's habitat and that puts big pressure on all the deer as many will die off from starvation especially in the winter.  Even healthy deer will be scrawny and weakened because of increased demand on the food supply by letting too many deer populate.  One could introduce wolves which would naturally cull the deer herd but thats another thorny problem.

Even healthy deer have a tough time making it through a Vermont or Maine winter and some will die of starvation.  So the idea is to use hunting to help cull each states excess deer herd to a healthy size and hunting does help.
"Never argue with a fool,  onlookers may not be able to tell the difference".  Mark Twain
