I was thinking about your friend, dating sites not much good here, so much deception. Best to meet people from local groups, maybe from what interests a person has. ex: hiking, bike riding, museum & art groups. Maybe a christian group?
Just some ideas. I know in summer, my group gets together in Santa Monica beach for socializing and volleyball, they have an e-mail list for other functions throughout the year.

Plentyofish has been getting a lot of bad rap lately, Lily...Be careful.

I'll second what GQBlues wrote.

Not sure how many people recommending POF actually used it, but when I did I thought it was plenty of fish, and all of them needed to be tossed back in the water.  This is especially true if you are looking for an interesting educated lady with a good world view.   Match.com in my part of the world was a little better, but in my metro area of 2.8 million it seemed to have a little turnover as I was on the site off & on for a number of years and it always seemed to be the same people, but when expanding the search to include other major metro areas, there was truly a number of interesting ladies.  

With eHarmony, usually those who use it are more serious.  But, it's slow going as you are limited to what they send you, but some good people can be found, even if you are closing 19 out of 20 profiles they match you with.  Now speaking from my last experience on the site which is a little dated, I opened my search radius to the entire world and had a lot of Chinese & Australians (many of which were Chinese immigrants), but I had a few matches I remember from Lisbon, Vancouver, Munich, and Helsinki and they were all ethnic Russians (plus a few from Russia itself).  Granted with eH it's not full proof as I had a period where they matched me with a man (needed to check my profile to see why they thought I was a switch hitter), married lady, and pregnant lady (in all those cases the people were not being too truthful).

No site can guarantee a good pool to chose from, it depends on lots of factor upon which we don't have control. We only can control one thing, it's ourselves. Everything else is beyond our control. Dating market in particular.

We understand however that this is a numbers game. Therefore we go to the sites that are reputed to have as many member as possible, believing that the more chances, the better are our own odds. At the same time, the number of members may fluctuate on whatever reasons. Sometime the market just 'sleeps' and we 'd better wait for other times. People come and go, change their life priorities, hide or close their profiles on a number of reasons.

Other than that, there may eventually be differences in male and female members of the site. Perhaps you can tell from the one side of market. On my part, I could not tell anything negative about the PoF. What particular bad raps do you mean?

Maybe you should tell your friend to try another approach. Find out her interests and suggest to her trying to meet similar people through classes, groups etc, where she will meet people with similar interests. Where she will meet men in her target age group obviously. Common interests are what bring people together. The problem with dating sites is that the majority of its members are working on "The Visuals" and then wonder why they can't find love. Its a bit like going to the supermarket and picking the best looking apple, and then when you bite into it, you discover that its tasteless. And if she can't grasp this approach, then let her stick with dating sites, and look on the bright side, you won't need to buy a hat for a while. Anyway good luck
