Yes the fact can be very sad but the situation or how it happened can be in some way comic - "laughing through the tears".

I agree, Olga, and had thought about that as a second option as well. Again, context is everything.

Sense of humor is a cultural thing. I also think saving money all your trip and then being robbed at your doorstep is rather comic.

I can also provide an opposite example.  I remember when Steve Irwin (Australian TV presenter) died all our office was sending jokes around. I thought it was distasteful.
There are shortcuts to happiness and dancing is one of them.

I do resent the fact that most people never question or think for themselves. I don't want to be normal. I just want to find some other people that are odd in the same ways that I am. OP.

There is no point talking to some people. At all. Why don't you say something like this at your in law's dinner table?

Would....The history does not operate in would. When I first posted I hoped you'd get puched in the face in the memory of 20 mlns dead in the War.  I just put you on ignore.

I am sorry that you were offended.  You are certainly entitled to your opinion.  I think Boethius understands what I was trying to say as it was a response to one of her posts.  If you read everything it might put it into context for you.

No, it wasn't jealousy in this case.  It was about disrespect.  Disrespect to her, and her labour.

Distasteful is also depends on context. Tragedy often engenders humour. I remember many, many years ago how many jokes were in circulation following the space shuttle that blew up.

You interpreted it as disrespect. As I do not know the people involved, it is hard to say whether it was truly a question of disrespect or something else....

No, that is what it was.  I was there.  I saw it.  That attitude was, and is, endemic in Ukraine.

It is your interpretation of events. Perhaps such an attitude is endemic in Ukraine, but it is not what I observed in Russia.

Not just my interpretation.  That of those around me, as well.

I suppose we could all be wrong, and you, who were not there, could be correct.

If Nazi Germany had tried to invade the USA back in 1941 they would have gotten a far different welcome than they got in Ukraine.
Lol, I've stayed out until I read this rubbish. The "Americans" would've given exactly the same welcome to the Nazis as they did to the Japanese at Pearl Harbour, they only lost, what was it, 18000 in a few hours plus a considerable amount of their naval assets? Why? Because they were totally unprepared for something like that, as they would've been for the Nazis as were the Ukrainians and for that matter, the Russians, as were the French, Polish, Poms and all the rest of us.

300 or 3000 years of patriotic history and a small weapon in every house wasn't going to make a scrap of difference. It took about 4 more years for the Americans and everyone else to "square up" the Japanese, interestingly, about the same time did for the (Chicken hearted?) Russians, Ukis and everyone else to square up the Nazis.

Such did not stop the damn Yankees in the 1860s.

Four years?  Pearl Harbor was December 1941.  In May 1942 the US Navy stalled Japanese advances at the Battle of Coral Sea not far from Oz.  One month later the US Navy decisively defeated the Japanese Navy at Midway in June 1942.  Midway sent the Japanese into a slow, hard fought retreat.  Expansion had ended and the war too should have ended then if the Japanese were not so fanatical.  Thus, it was 6 months and not four years.

The Germans invaded Poland in 1939 and the Soviet Union in June 1941.  The Nazi forces in Stalingrad surrendered in February 1943 and those in North Africa in June 1943.  From there is was a near straightline retreat to two bullets in a bunker.  So that was four years, but only 21 months after the Soviet Union was invaded

No, I did not serve in WWII.   :D  I, however, just returned from a holiday in New Orleans which has a superb WWII museum.

Gator: I'll happily yield to live (cough) knowledge of timelines. Nevertheless, timelines are not the main point. Can anyone honestly claim they would have been prepared for an onslaught such as the Nazi war machine? Unless they are something like the fellow below, I highly doubt it.

More particularly, I doubt any thinking person in good concience can take pothshots at the Russian war "effort" or courage albeit if a bit technologically retarded even for the time.

All conjecture but I agree with you.  If Germany had the capability to invade America in 1938, the world would probably be a very different place.  First off, we were so completely unprepared for war (our standing, outdated army was a whopping 136,000), secondly, the way America made a difference on the western front was much more than just scrambling troops together but in the completely isolated, safe haven of manufacturing.  That island of isolation cannot be stressed as important enough.

Yep, we'd have probably fought very bravely and succumbed rather quickly and then perhaps under occupation would have had the American Partisans, or American Underground, maybe American Resistance, but sure as hell, we'd have been flying swastikas.... at least for quite a while

I haven't felt the urge to kill in quite some time (outside of the midst of Canadian traffic anyway), but visions of machine guns danced through my head over that one.  That was actually nauseating to see.

Exactly, which was your primary point, not whether it was months or years.

Just think how Continental Europe would be today if the Nazis had not attacked the Soviet Union and the Japanese had not attacked America.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program  :o .

Aabout cursing women I wanted to say that one of my favorite RW loves the saying "get the fu*k outta here" when she hears it. I do a really good impression of the classic "Soprano style" way of saying it that just makes her hit the floor, especially on cue for a particular situation  ;D .

And she might be one of the nicest people you'll ever meet in your life.

Maybe it was a cursing woman who started the war in the first place. Now think about that!

I am currently reading Barbara W. Tuchman's The Guns of August, covering the first month of WWI in 1914.

I was surprised to learn that what we consider typical Nazi mentality was already in place then in the Imperial German army, e.g. during their invasion and occupation of Belgium: reprisals like shooting local civilian hostages (600+ in one case) for supposed guerrilla activities by francs tireurs (sharpshooters), burning villages and cities and wantonly destroying cultural treasures like the library of Louvain's University, founded in 1425:

Quote
Upon German entry in World War I, the town was heavily damaged due to German Schrecklichkeit policy. The Germans shot the burgomaster, university rector and all the city's police officers. The university library was deliberately destroyed by the German army on August 25, 1914, using petrol and incendiary pastilles. Hundreds of thousands of irreplaceable volumes and Gothic and Renaissance manuscripts were lost.
Quote
Schrecklichkeit (German "terror" or "frightfulness") was a military policy of the German Army towards civilians in World War I during the invasion of Belgium, France and Poland as well as in Russia.

Likewise, women on this forum and elsewhere can discuss anything sexual with no problem, but if the man does the same, he is labeled a pervert, etc. and will be hounded forever by many.

Get used to it.

Cool! Could you please give me a link to a thread on this forum where women post photos of attractive guys they noticed on the streets, or photos of very young semi-naked boys in hotel rooms in "tempting"  poses, and discuss these men's "popka's," "boobs/ triceps/ eyes," and the length and curvature of legs. Thanks

I am going to California in a few days, wait for my trip report, with photos of tan and toned, blond and tall, and ultra hot male surfers  :toocool:
