Boethius I have to say this, not everyone sees the world the same as you. What you and your circle of friends/associates, call them what you will, might see as inappropriate attire, others will see as ok. We are all different and unique in our own special way and we mix with those who think and see the world the same as ourselves. But I will be sure to inform all the local guys here who are in pretty much in the same attire and around my age that they are all dressed inappropriately, it could take a very long time, there is alot of them.

I didn't post that it was inappropriate, nor do I think how you were dressed was inappropriate, and I certainly did  not intend to offend you.  My point was more about my assumption you are in Ukraine to meet women.  You are, are you not?

As for local guys, that is irrelevant.

I'm in UA right know and I'll agree with the ladies.

 :welcome:      Svetlana

Rubicon, this is the most funny reply i ever read on this forum. REALLY???
American men are dating FSUW women who dress CASUAL??? Try wearing shoes with 4"+ heels on stone-paved road somewhere in Kyiv or Odessa and a tight mini-skirt or mini-shorts, a tight top on a super-hot and muggy Ukrainian summer day, ! That will give you a good idea of what is CASUAL.    To say women "enjoy" it would be a huge overstatement. You are calling it "values"? Double standards i say. A man in super-comfy shapeless clothes and a girl in super uncomfy "feminine" apparel.
I have yet to see anyone posting a photo from trip report to Ukraine with a girl wearing flip-lops, shaggy knee-long shorts and a shapeless t-shirt 2 size bigger than the lady.

Well Mies I'm glad that one of my posts made you laugh instead of upset!!  Yes I have been to Crimea and there were plenty of Russian men aged 20, 30, 40, even 50 AND Russian women wearing just shorts and T-shirts and casual shoes or sandals.  You and Boethius can give all the advice that you want to but printed T-shirts are here to stay and I seriously doubt if Handycam or myself or others are going to stop wearing them while out on a hot day on vacation near the beach or whatever.  And by the way, HE WAS ON A BOAT, for christ's sake!!

ok ok.. i allow everybody wearing t-shirt on a boat.  today I am super kind, and can allow anybody wearing anything they want: t-shirts, shorts, bikinis, only sun-lotion, nothing at all - please feel free..  :blowkiss:

P.S. can he wear a different t-shirt on the boat, the one which would be better fitted? pleeeease :D
P.P.S. to attract someone with similar preferences for clothes you need to have in common a bit more than preference for comfy clothes, or have more assets than just your free-willed spirit. Let's say a 40-50-60-70yo man who never exercises, isn't very healthy nor smart, nor charismatic, nor rich would not be able to attract 20-30yo good-looking woman based on the sole fact that both he and she wear comfy t-shirt and shorts. I even dare to assume that a 20-30 yo guy who has nothing else to offer other than his love for loose t-shirts will have rather hard time getting attention of an attractive woman his own age, or even older, no matter what she wears.
You tried to offend Svetlana, but made rather weak argument.  :P

Kuna, good illustrations.  UM and UW are not as dressed up as we are led to believe.  However, dating is about impressing the other and any UW would be more impressed by a man who wore fine clothing.  I consider it a sign of respect for the other.

Pic 5:  Do we REALLY have to tuck our T-Shirts into our jeans?

No, but if you had the body of this particular UM you would want to show it off in a tasteful manner.

And not to mention that an Ukrainian woman is giving a guy some tips to be successful with the ladies. What the hell does a UW knows about that, right?

Yesterday Vinny pointed something out about Svetlana1990 and after I thought about it a bit I must say it seems he is on to something there.

I am a right-left brained individual and my left brain is taking over from my right brain now.

At the time Svetlana1990 made her post Boethius was getting hammered by a few guys about this t-shirt thing.

No one had supported her yet.

Then along comes Svetlana1990 out of the blue, who offers her support.

If Svetlana was a regular here that wouldn't raise any eyebrows.

But let's take a look at these circumstances and put them altogether:

1. Svetlana1990 registered just yesterday and of all the posts on this board, she just 'happened to find this one' and made her debut post (one and only), in support of Boethius.
She made her post in less than four minutes after registering.

2. Svetlana1990 just happens to be from Ukraine.

3. Svetlana1990 just happens to be studying in Canada now in Alberta, out of the hundreds and thousands of different places to live in this world.

4. Boethius just happens to be living in western Canada (I believe in Alberta).

What are the chances that all of the above just happened randomly?

Are you suggesting I am Svetlana?   Why not say so directly if that's the case?

The timing of our posts, and the fact I was online at a different IP address when she posted, would not support this.  But, you are free to ask Admin or Dave to check the IP addresses.

I know for a fact that there are other posters from Alberta and, in fact, from my city, who have posted here in the past.

What about mies?  Am I mies as well?

As Odessa was mentioned I will throw this into the pot ….

I first went there in early summer 2008 and the place was wall to wall of drop dead gorgeous smokinghotkovas in high heels and short skirts. It was a heterosexual male’s dream. I’ve been back a few times since but only in deepest winter.

I was there this weekend and although the weather wasn’t particularly brilliant there was a distinct lack of the aforementioned ‘kovas on show. Many ladies seemed to have swapped skirts and heels for jeans and sandals. Even ‘Ibiza’ was a disappointment.

On my first visit I wore shorts but just the once as it seemed like I was the centre of some sort of spot the alien game and I needed to phone home. This time I noticed how many local men were wearing shorts.

I have no doubt that times are a changing and fast. I’ve witnessed the above happen in Bratislava, Slovakia over the years … I fear the worst. :-[

I agree with you Vinny, times are changing and fast.  I have no problem with dressing up for dinner or going to a museum or art gallery or to the ballet or to meet her parents.  I'm even willing to dress a little better while strolling on a hot summer day if it brings back the SmokinHotKovas in heels and short skirts!!

Thank you for the link to online apparel store. I like the style of some of their dresses, but the smallest size they make is UK size 8, i need UK size 2, in rare occasions UK size 4 max, but it is too loose on me and looks not very good. But still - many good ideas, maybe i can custom order dresses using the drawings of the models from the company website ;)

Wow. UK size 4 is Russian 38. I do not think UK has size 2, at least I have never seen one. Normally adult sizes in the shop start with 8, very really 6. #Where do you buy your clothes?
There are shortcuts to happiness and dancing is one of them.

I do resent the fact that most people never question or think for themselves. I don't want to be normal. I just want to find some other people that are odd in the same ways that I am. OP.

LOL
very funny thread.

Fashion styles differ.

A nice snug T shirt in ukranie , looks to a westerner like
its two sizes too small ,
and the man is wearing his kids clothes.

equally the  western T- shirt , perhaps two sizes too big,
look ridiculas and sloppy to an eastern european, like its a child wearing his fathers shirt.

In my mind , both parties should be aware the fashins are different..
and be wiling to compromise a bit in the situations.. it's a fairly minor thing.

Odds are in these scenarios the man is traveling to her country , so the onus is more on him to make a good impression if he so chooses.

If they move forward and she relocates, she should also understand that her cultures fashion , may not truly fit many situations here..
To dress better isnt a bad thing at all,
but to expect a man to wear something that doesnt fit his culture or group of friends and associates ...is as strange as him going out on a first date to a nice restuarant wearing something *odd* for her culture or how she is dressed for the occassion.
not fair to her, as she knows the perceptions of those aroung her in her culture .
and equally the reverse isnt fair to him, within his culture.

Hey I was in Crimea last summer, LOTS of casual wear seen, as many people are indeed on vacation.Shorts,  sandals, Tshirts, etc..abounded.
However yes in general,  on the street, people do dress far more nicely in the FSU than in the west.

perhaps amusingly in this thread-
That  trips first meeting with someone was at a nice, but casual restuarant.  I wore cream dress slacks, nice shoes and a nice pattern/collared shirt that would be perhaps not deemed a *dress*  suit shirt, but certainly not casual either.
(she had actually commented i should wear it,, from some past photo)
This would be deemed normal , to maybe slightly over dressed , for a similar restuarant in the west.
and it certainly fit her attire for the evening(which she would agree)

The amusing part? is the different cultural perceptions. :)

Of course not known at the moment, but later i know she found the slacks to be very big and baggy
( they are typical classic suit cut style, in my exact size)
and the shirt was requested in a bit of joking  sarcasm ,  as she actually doesn't like  it but its the first photo she had of me.

So much for fashion faux pas  :D

Next time I'm not shaving a couple days, and just wearing XL T shirt, that reads *I love HaterZ*
my torn up jack sparrow pirate shorts ,
and sandals that fit in perfectly well in Cabo.
(and a sombrero if i can get it thru checked baggage)

by the way she has seen me in that outfit as well,
and was fine with it,
so i'm not sure if thats a lose -win, win- lose, win- win
or lose- lose scenario..

In my estimation, 100%. There are many guests looking on everyday and many more members who have joined and never made a single post yet continue to read. All of the sudden they feel they can contribute something worthy and then do. Thats the "facts" of the situation.

As for the speculation, what you are inferring I wouldn't for 100 years believe it. Boethuis is well above reproach and more than proven herself  to be so. That behavior is a very underhanded act that when perpetrated is usually discovered. Boethuis whether you like or approve of her or not, would have no motivation to do so. I've never detected that she cared rather or not someone agreed with her. She tells you how it is as she see's it, unplugged.

Absolutely agree, and I think all the UW/ or RW in this thread gave their exact perceptions.

I have noticed a trend over a decade on these boards for western men to very often ignore or chide advice
given by UW ,based on a trip or 3 they have made and some observations.

Mostly it's amusing to see that.

Granted I'm guilty as charged! :)
Having been to the FSU  many times.. lived in an area of it awhile as well, I find i  don't always agree with their exact take on everything.

However anytime that comes up, I really step back!!

It makes me ponder their advice even more deeply.
As I very likely have missed something.

:)

I am russian size 34 or sometimes 36 depending on clothes. American 0 or 00. Banana Republic has size 0 and sometimes 00 in dresses. I like silk dresses from Converse and BCBG or other brands of Max Azria, - they have xs and 0 sizes. Designer dresses often come in extra-small sizes. One of my most recent acquisitions - Helmut Lang little black dress bought on sale, in size 0.

No that's not what I was suggesting. Lord knows I'm a direct person. :)

Rubicon understood correctly what I was implying; that maybe you and Svetlana know each other and that you encouraged her to join up and comment on the subject. At the time, no one else had supported your position and you sounded a bit defensive in your posts.
