lordart, it is good you look for a your high standard and similar person. But if lady is smart it not means she must be a computer genius or something else. I just look at myself. When i met my ex-husband i could only type the text on the computer. He was IT manager. Now I am web-designer and use Photoshop excellent and have a freelance job for extra money. I studied those programs myself, he couldn't help me cos he is just IT engineer.
So I think you have to understand interests and habits of each other.

I never said to the contrary.  The whole idea is to have similar interests and/or compatible interests.  Things we can enjoy teaching each other as well.  I certainly wouldn't expect her to be a computer programmer (but that has happened in the past).  I expect a few overlapping interests to keep things going, and the rest are things we'd like to learn about each other's world.  I am certainly not expecting a mirror.  But I do expect, if not interest in my non-overlapping activities, a tolerance of them.  So stating them upfront I think is of value.

If a lady is pretty but dumb, I'm not going to want to be around them other than the bedroom.  I'm looking for a life companion, not just to have fun in the bedroom.  Both are just as important to me.  So intellect of the lady is very important to me.  One thing that impressed me about the ladies I met in St. Petersburg was their beauty mixed with their intelligence, and in the case of the lady I was seeing, overlapping interests with my own.  Which is why I'm trying this.  So for finding what I'm looking for perhaps isn't so far fetched.  ;)

And as much as some of you may be scoffing at me saying I look younger than I am, it has been truly a serious problem.  I've had to show my drivers license many times to prove it, so it isn't me trying to stroke my own ego.  I even dated this one lady who WAS 40 as well, and she wouldn't even talk to me on a romantic level until I proved I was her age.  Even when we broke things off, she said I was too young for her.  The people I hang out with are in their 20s and early thirties.  I don't think of myself as 40, but as 25 to be honest.  The lady I was visiting would take me to dub step clubs to 6 AM, and she was tired and I was still going.  I'm not as young as I use to be for sure, but it's not about ego.  On the opposite end, I remember this one lady who really liked me and was barely 25 at a speed dating event, and afterwards we went to dinner with a few other people at the event.  The topic came up about ages, and I was truthful about my  own.  The look on her face was like I betrayed her and killed her cat, even though the ranges for the event was 25-40.

And this is my case and point:

Who wouldn't want to be with someone younger????
Me  :)

So please believe me, I don't mention the issue to toot my own horn, but to present the problems I face.

Many people look different in person than in pictures, and I know that is very much true for myself.  I know my strengths and weaknesses.  I've spent a long time figuring them out. ;)  The best parts of me are when you get to know me.  The problem is getting past that initial meeting stage where all you see are looks.  While I'm not ugly by any means, I know I'm not a movie star either.

Maybe you should seek a 40 year old women that really looks 25?

If you insist on sticking with that profile at least break it down into a few paragraphs. I also suggest that you ditch the idea of sending EOI’s. If you like the look of someone send them a nice personal message, though if you’re insisting on getting your female friends to continue to help you, your inbox may remain a little quiet.

lordat :
First, what you don't know is that after some time the newbie effect has gone : it has why you need, before posting, to have the better profile possible. After you need to use an other site.
The competition on EM is tight, more on this site than on others. Express your personality is good, more women than men read profile, let's hope it is not too long and easy to read. Just what i want to tell you is that it is better to select AFTER fishing rather than reject a lot, as at this level of relationship things are very superficial.

My last advice : if you perform really better in real life (that is/was my case) than on a site : MAKE A TOUR, or a WMVM and change your strategy. If it is the case and that you are picky, drop the correspondance step, just use it the lasts weeks before your travel WHEN you know you go.

Actually that part of things.  A lady that will keep their looks rather than losing them quickly.  Some ladies keep it together and other just seem to disintegrate.

*BUT*

I've actually got some positive responses and initial requests from some of the cuter ones there.  Ok, one from an EOI I sent and one from her initially mailing me.  So, for my initial letter, life story or just a quick hello or something inbetween?  As I said, online dating has never worked for me, so I don't have an opening email put together.  I have a "hello" kind of initial contact email, but that doesn't really seem so appropriate, even for the EOI, because they have already expressed interest in both cases.

That's the problem I was worrying so much about the profile, I didn't get together a good response email, just an initial "are you interested" email.  Shows my priorities I guess.

So...A simple Hi, how are you, with a few questions, or write a big long email about me and my background (with a few question thrown in)?

Questions?  Comments?  Deaththreats?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

P.S.  Beard isn't going anywhere.  I have scars underneath from a childhood surgery.  Besides, I shaved it off earlier this year to see what was there, and I looked like Mr. Potatohead without it, so no thanks. ;)

... keep the critiques coming, they are useful to me!

Arthur

Well...
Arthur, how about diluting a hokey Capricorn's accent held in your profile by adding some natural flavorings to it, for example, some humor ???
Why wouldn't you show your funny side? This would definitely make your profile more appealing!

Although your profile photo is very nice, I'd suggest that you put some effort to choose another one. A primary picture of you smiling would make you more approachable; it would show you in your best light, and set another tone for (fill in the blank)  :) IMO, of course.

Thank you for removing "Russian version" from your profile :)
Machine translators are far from perfect, so every time you consider using them you must keep that in mind. In most cases, they don't work well, especially if slangs, colloquialisms or idiomatic expressions are used.
FYI: the Google's translation of the sentence  "I'll always bend over backwards ..." into Russian was rather confusing than clarifying your attitude towards friendship.  :-\

Good luck!

Why so harsh criticism for russian translation? I've understood almost all OP wants to tell about himself. Machine translators are not perfect but they facilitate  a talk as far as companions know their limitations.
If OP asked here to fix the russian version he would already have it done, it's the short text.

Why? To crucify the machine translators for misleading interpretations
According to the Russian version, Arthur will always fawn over his friends !!!
After all, online translators are available, so let a woman put some effort into translating his profile

You've screwed the pooch with a profile as forthcoming as that one. Women tend to like and appreciate being stung along with an element of teasing mystery. You've shot that wad in one go there.

Tell them a "little" more about you but, more importantly ask about them and include another pic of you. It's disclosure time and make it a snapshot. Those professional pics and the beard appear to be hiding something you shouldn't be hiding.

Ghost, my wife said almost the same.

Arthur, first  :welcome:

Hope we can be of help.

Again, my wife suggested you "let your hair down" on the main picture of your profile.

IMHO, I think you are putting the cart before the horse with all the explanations and requests. This process is not an instamatic approach. Of course you would like to post a profile that your soul mate will answer to but that only works in movies.

First, what you are doing is looking for your soul mate. IOW, you look.

Of course, it would be nice to sit back and respond to 500 letters a day from potential mates but that's not going to happen.

(Hint: These ladies like to be chased so put on your running shoes and hit the pavement.)

It is nice and all to have your profile posted. However, it will be secondary to your main activity which is going through the ladies profiles and making your selections. This is what you have to do.

Good luck.

The professionally translated version of my profile is up.  I've gotten 4 positive responses so far (3 from EOIs), ages 24, 25, 29, 30.  Considering I've only gotten 3 rejections from the EOIs, that's 50%, not bad at all.  Surprisingly good actually.

As I said in a previous post, what do you think should be in the first response letter?  Just a hi and here is my real email address, or my life story, or something inbetween.  I read somewhere it should include a lot, including why you are bothering with searching for a lady so far away, what you like to do day to day, etc.  I don't want to overwhelm, but I don't want to be minimal.  Any suggestions?

Arthur

P.S.  This should be the last I bother you since if emails are flowing, there shouldn't be a problem and I can take it from there. ;)  I just want to get my first email's contents right.

Art,

IMO you are WAY over thinking all of this.

Keep in mind it is just a profile, not a magic wand.

Keep it simple and you will be just fine.

This is a lot like fishing.
Put your bait in the water and wait until you get a bite.
It requires patience.
If you are that guy who is constantly reeling your line in , to change bait, or change to the flashy new Rapala, triple teaser, or spoon...
Then calling a professional fishing guide to give  you instruction...
It just confuses and scares the fish.
Just put on a worm and get it in the water.
Once you get a bite, THEN you can try to keep her hooked and get her in the boat.

Very few men in this pursuit would state or believe they look older than their age, knowwhaddameen? Everybody thinks and feels younger than they are. Of course that's on the inside. The outside is a whole 'nother kettle of fish.

Why do we keep beating guys up about this age looks vs age actual stuff?

I don't just go by what I think; many, many people have told me that my real age is much younger than I look.

IMO you are WAY over thinking all of this.

Keep in mind it is just a profile, not a magic wand.

It think the profile topic is dead.   :deadhorse:  What I have there works and is functional, and I'm getting positive responses from the ladies I'm going after, so I can't ask for anything more.  Now I'm just trying to iron out the first letter, after interest has already been established.  The rest will take care of itself.

When you said, must love a geek you were not kidding .. lol

relax and just be yourself.

I'm not THAT bad.  I have just never done this before so I like to know what I'm doing, that's all.  I'd rather not burn the bridges that I don't need to because I not informed.  I honestly don't know what they are expecting from the first letter.  I do far better with chats.  Far more interactive and easier to feel out the conversation than lobbing emails over the wall hoping what comes back isn't on fire.  ;)

Only don't describe all your life in the first letter  ;)

I wasn't going to, just be sarcastic. ;)  Thank you for answering.  So you feel a longish letter, rather than a very short one then?

Really, who cares whether someone looks younger than his age?

I've always looked younger than Jason's age..   That's far more important... but now I need to get that professionally translated into Russian.

Good luck with it Art.  I'm sure you'll be fine.  One simple fact about all of this is -- interest will wax and wane.  A lady will seem VERY into you and then just vanish without a word, or trace, into the oblivion of cyberspace.  Of course, that never happened to ME, but I've read stories about it.  In this wacky and bizarre world of international dating,  be GLAD that many weed themselves out even when it feels strange.

Second simple fact: it is a numbers game.  Stay emotionally detached until it's time to take things to a deeper level.
The duty of a true patriot is to protect his country from its government. -- Thomas Paine
