When looking for rentals the single biggest mistake visitors make is to make a Google search in English. There all the rental agents will have you convinced that the only kind of quality apartment is at least $5000 per month on a lease; or the bevy of expats
taking care of their countrymen for $250+ per day. Search in Russian and you'll discover normal people renting nice apartments, even in Moscow, plenty at under $100 per day.
When looking at a listing there is a quick way to tell if the rental is daily or only on contract (lease) for months at a time. When you see:
сут (or сутки) = An owner only uses сут if they're willing to rent it for a few days or weeks at a time. Example: if you see 1800p сут. then you'll know that the apartment can be rented short term and the daily rent is $60 per day.
мес. = abbreviation for months. This is a long term rental and unless you are moving there to live for awhile you should move on to the next listing.
час. = is literally the word for "hour." You won't see this one often, but you know what it means if you do.
