Thanks, Phil... I'm scanning the site and already see several B1-to-resident threads!  Time for some reading!

I don't spend much time here these days, but started to read your thread just now. I've just read some of it, but can quickly see that it's well worth the time reading the rest. All real life personal stories are interesting, but yours is also very well written and you come across to me as a decent and good person.

I was raised in the South, and taught Southern manners by my mother and grandmother.  So as Marina and I are leaving the building, out of habit I opened the car door for her.  She was surprised for a moment, then smiled shyly and said “thank you.”

That's one of the things I like about the USA, the small acts of politness that we see all too seldom in Europe. The "how are you", "good for you", the "Sir" when you're being served. It's values I hope Americans will continue to observe.
I remember way back, when my former FIL from Spain got offended whenever someone pressed ahead walking into an establishment without letting people exit first. I guess that was (is) an unwritten law in Spain and I like it. It's logical as well as a sign of recognizing other people. So your mother and grandmother taught you well, Slingerland.
