I told ya we scared the living hell out of him...  >:D     Everyone send him PM's telling him that there's a breaking news story that a new burst of radiation from Chernobyl is causing major and immediate mutations in Kiev and the surrounding area.  Before long we'll have him meeting her somewhere like the Canary Islands.
Funny that you mention  Chernobyl. It seems that the dangers are exaggerated there  also !!

No, they aren't.  Chernobyl' and the surrounding region have hot spots, and they are pretty random.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

They are random but not numerous. People have moved back to live in exclusion zone and it seems that they and animals have not suffered any obvious issues at this time.
Did you notice they are doing conducted tours?

They were doing tours in 1990, and my better half was stationed there at the time.  I know how much radiation there really was.

There are whole swaths of land that are still unsafe.

I saw a program on TV about mutant animals in that area.   Spooky.

Hubby says vegetation regenerated very quickly.  There were deformities, such as gigantism, but grass and mushrooms recuperated.  He also says Belarus is more contaminated than Ukraine, due to the prevailing winds at the time of the explosion.

He said in the hospitals, there were bald children with patches of hair, and he saw almost the same patterns in trees.  He viewed it as part of the connectedness of all living things.  He also said some parts were almost identical to Tarkovsky's movie Stalker.

Of course, I can't speak for the accuracy of this film

But apparently there are some residents who did not leave or who left and came back and want to stay in Chernobyl.

That's been the case since the explosion, so it is nothing new  When my husband was in service there, they routinely would catch villagers sneaking in for a variety of reasons.  These were, for the most part, simple folk, and they didn't understand what radiation meant.  With old folks, he would usually let them go in for an hour, usually, it was for remembrances, but he would tell them they couldn't take their grandchildren.  They also did not understand why they couldn't eat, or sell, a basket of forest mushrooms they picked that were full of radiation.  They did come have everything tested, because of military orders in the region.

Regardless--the OP rearranged plans to not go there and stay in Kiev .

I never said I was rearranging my plans to not visit the lady in Zap. I am not sure where that came from. I am leaving Denver airport next week destined for an eventual landing in Zap with several city stops in between.

BTW, just in case I have also been corresponding with some other ladies in Ukraine as well. One lady in Dnipropetrovsk and another in Mykolaiv. The lady in Mykolaiv is already asking me when I will visit her.

Is it possible that missing reports regarding environmental/pollution conditions, and the effect it has on its population, in and around Ukraine are intentionally kept away from international eyes because Ukraine had been vying to become part of the greater EU community? Would your hubby know?

It's reported that, for instance, Zap's population back in 1989 was actually 150,000 more than what is reported in 2011. That's a whopping 15% +/- decrease. That would somewhat 'support' a suppressed call of help back in 2010 that attempted to generate attention from the global community through the UN, but failed to reach their signature goal.

Then Jensen, read through this for general information and tips.

It will also have the same type of info on the other places you mentioned.

"...Zaporizhzhya is known for its steel plants. They are not seen from the sity, but if you go to the south of city, to industrial area, for exmpl, Juzhnoe Shosse, you will see those giants from afar. Huge pipes with puffs, working 24h. Also, there corresponding air, full of burning metal smell....."

No, I don't think so.  I think it was worse in the Soviet period.

It would not surprise me if there is less pollution today.  In the Soviet period, all factories ran full steam.  Now, most factories are idle, so, less pollutants are being spewed into the air.  Having said that, the rivers are far more polluted now than they were in Soviet times.

First off-- I never said or inferred anything whatsoever about not visiting the Zap lady.Thought I read  Zap lady was meeting you in Kiev--  apologies for my mistake. Confused with another newish member I think.

Later update !!
Maybe not  another member but your post in another thread?

From Nov 14th Quoting--"  I am scheduled to fly to Ukraine  November 27th.Travelling through Istanbul to Kiev. My lady friend has arranged for me to rent an apartment there because she says it will be nicer than a hotel."
Look familiar words? No mention of  of ZAP in that post--- and any reasonable person  reading that would conclude you were staying in an apartment "there"--in Kiev.
Would not be so pedantic usually--but as you can see your comments are being used  by forum fool -again--in his paranoid attempts to ridicule me. :)

I am scheduled to fly to Ukraine November 27th. Travelling through Istanbul and Kiev. My lady friend has arranged for me to rent an apartment there because she says it will be nicer than a hotel. I am not sure why this is but I am prepared to accede to her suggestions.

I will check into the translate app you mentioned.

There are a very small number of villagers living in the exclusion zone who refused to leave. Just a few handfuls, elderly, and dying off by aging. A small Orthodox chapel is maintained and a priest from Kyiv conducts services one Sunday each month for those residents.

But that doesn't account for the sheer volume of oddly shaped heads noted by a recent traveler.  Something is amiss over there...

Yes, I forgot about those oddly shaped Slavic heads.  :D

I don't think that Chernobyl had anything to do with protruding ears on Slavic men either...

I did the tour to Chernobyl before but we had radiation suits and spent less then 2 hours in what they call the zone.  Take a bus from Kiev and stop about hour ride out from the famous ferris wheel and get lunch and suit up.  Then drive in on different bus and then back for dinner.  Then back home.
There were other tours at same time and they were not wearing suits.
A lot of radiation comes down the river into Kiev.  When I lived in Kiev knew a lot of expats who got cancer in their 3 year stay in Kiev and several have died.  The Dnipro river is full of radiation and people keep dredging the river to make it deeper kicking up buried radiation.  Never drink the local water.  Its in the pipes throughout the city.  Brushing teeth with local water is dangerous in the old buildings.  Most locals use bottled water for brushing teeth.
But Belraus, Germany, and Sweden got more radiation then Ukraine.  Winds were blowing away from Ukraine for several days when this happened.  That being said more than 60 miles away in Kiev they found millions of  particles over the next 10 years.
The famous boxing brothers - Klitchko's were young and near Chernobyl when it happened.  Sharipova was less then one year old and in Belarus and parents moved away right away.  Did it cause them to grow taller then normal?

I doubt it.  There is hormesis as a phenomenon however: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hormesis

Both of her parents are only a bit shorter than she is, see this page (scroll down):
