Where your Heart is .... is that where your politics are?
« on: March 12, 2014, 07:28:52 PM »
By now, everyone is getting tired of the sides playing out between people who are mortified by the Russian occupation (or the Crimean people rising up in opposition to the Neo Nazis in Kyiv, depending on your point of view).  Perhaps more and more, the end game is in sight.  I, like many people, will be surprised if Russia seeks to annex Eastern Ukraine.  I don't see it lining up.

So, the big question on my mind is:  Was your political thought on this issue based on where your Honey is from?  Or wannabe Honey?

Let me be the first to say, I don't really have a dog in this hunt as my SO is from Belarus.  She could care less where the chips fall.  And she is as apolitical as they come.  She has friends from both Ukraine and Russia.  But many of our friends do hail from one of these two countries.  So what happens to your thought process when the person sleeping on the other side of the bed has strong opinions?

I think it would be very interesting to know how you arrived at your conclusions.

Would anyone be willing to state, for the record, where their SO is from and how that impacts your point of view?

For those reading this forum (and we have many these days) it would be a great understanding of how your reactions to threads are influenced.

Share with us.  Tell us where you woman is from and the types of discussions you have had.

My wife is from Russia and she is Russian to the core and very proud of that fact. She has never been a fan of Putin and has told me she fears what he's been doing and probably will be doing to the country for years to come. She was born and lived the Soviet era. Most of her family and friends say they feel likewise. It's the corruption he fuels and it extends all the way down to the municipal level in her Siberian city where it affects every facet of life.

One thing she told me during the recent events in Ukraine when I told her about the Russian support on this forum of Putin's actions was "they have nothing to be proud of and should be ashamed of him and themselves. Ukraine needs to be left alone to solve their problems. Crimea has always been Ukraine. It's the Putin style mafia looking to steal everything they can"

That is one sensible lady!! In no way wishing to make light of this current crisis-- but I have at no time believed Putin had the support of the Russian population. As far as Ukraine goes--73 % thought it wa none of their business-- and that was prior to current crisis-- I would be surprised if that was not higher now.
So for me-- when I say 'Russian" in the context of Ukraine today--I mean Putin's Russians. It is very hard to suppress the anger I am feeling now.
In the current situation I am being more careful than ever about disclosing any personal details.

Betsy is anti-political and doesn't care to hear my opinion on the matter even during 22 February when she did care about what happened.

Congratulations on your relationship.  I hope it works out for you and HER.

Political affiliation: Wifey is a lot like me, right of center, thus she's a registered Republican. Such a smart, smart gal.

Nationality: She's Russian. So it's understandable she was rooting for the Russian Hockey Team.  :P Needless to say, she thinks Russia won the game and the goal should not have been disallowed. Moreover, she strongly feels both Jonathan Quick and TJ Oshie cheated.

My wife is Russian and apolitical. She does, however, believe Putin is a jerk. So do most of her friends...the ones that voice their opinions anyway. The others are apathetic. They clearly feel that life has improved for them since the volatile 90s, but they know that things can again change and there is little they can do about it.

I share my wife's view of Putin. I also love her country...but hate her government (sound familiar?) Like her, I wish only the best for Russia and her people. Relations between our countries is also very important to both of us for obvious reasons.

Neither of us have taken sides throughout the Ukraine ordeal. All sides are wrong as far as I'm concerned. What both of us hope for at this point is that sh!t doesn't get any worse than it already has.

Paranoia is contagious. I made this conclusion on the hysterical posts of Ukrainian wives husbands here and at RUA. As a rule, those who have Russian wives, are more restrained in their assessments.

Perhaps that is understandable given that it wasn't their wive's country under the threat of invasion and/or secession. ;)

My wife an I disagree on some points that have happened but I think we are on a similar page on how we think it will or should turn out. I guess it's understandable that like minded people tend to marry and so will tend towards having similar views on important subjects, at least ideally.

Oh, and then there are people like [censored**] that are rabid, fanatical fantasists with a whole barrow full of faux offense to share and who like to regurgitate huge amounts of opinions from others that they find on the net that happen to coincide with their world view - somehow they think that these other opinions validate and confirm their views on a subject, without realizing that they are generally as useless as their own.

I guess you could say it is now (after it intervened in Crimea) although only the naive and foolish think that the threats will escalate beyond a few token sanctions that the Russia government and money men will hardly care much about anyway.

Nice article, I agree totally with your words and they reflect my thoughts. Just one thing, let's be honest, there are russian troops in Crimea. They are really here. And according to the quantity and type of war techniques they keep bringing to Sevastopol Crimea will be saved from Ukrainian occupation 200% :) Putin promised that after the 16 of March there will be no russian troops on the ukrainian territory and this time I think we can believe him :D

Paranoia is contagious. I made this conclusion on the hysterical posts of Ukrainian wives husbands here and at RUA. As a rule, those who have Russian wives, are more restrained in their assessments.

There is more than one point that needs to be answered here.  Firstly, although you are Russian, aren't you from Vladivostok?  Even if the countries went to war (and let us hope that they never even get close to that) you're nearly as far away as it's possible to get but still be in Russia.  I doubt that you would be the slightest bit affected unless, of course, you have family or friends who might be in the firing line.

Secondly, I think you're being a bit harsh in describing posts as "hysterical."  Concerned?  Certainly, bearing in mind that, as you say, many posters here have Ukrainian wives or girlfriends.  In some cases those wives have not yet left Ukraine to live in their husband's country, but all still have family there, and many of those live in Crimea.  They have every right to be concerned, especially as Crimea is now, in physical terms, almost totally isolated from the rest of the world.  You can't drive into it, the trains aren't running, and all flights except those to and from Moscow have been cancelled.

Thirdly, I believe that the first and last parts of your statement could well go together.  Some of those with Russian wives may well fear that, if they make too loud a noise, the FSB will track down them or their families in Russia, with all sorts of possible consequences.  Paranoia may well be contagious, but sometimes it's justified.  Even hypochondriacs get sick sometimes.

The information war is the war also. Russia is under the threat also.

From whom?  Eyewitnesses who are actually telling the truth about things they have seen?  Russian speaking Crimean residents, who say they have never been persecuted just for being Russian, and who want to remain part of Ukraine?

Thank you for admitting this.  It's more than Putin has done.  However, how can Ukraine occupy part of its own territory?

Putin promised that after the 16 of March there will be no Russian troops on the Ukrainian territory and this time I think we can believe him :D

That depends on how you define Ukraine.  The 16th is the day of the referendum, after which, if you and many other Russians in Crimea have your way, you will consider that Crimea is no longer part of Ukraine.  It therefore won't matter to Putin how long his troops stay where they are, because they will supposedly no longer be "on Ukrainian territory."

I mean emotional occupation for people leaving here. Nobody asked us when 23 years ago we became part of Ukraine and nothing changed during this period, we didn't become Ukrainians.

My Wife is from and in Ukraine, far enough away from Kyrm to be safe for time being.
She is not big on politics, but has be following all of this closely.
From my perspective, Ukraine has been a peaceful country ( in regard to other countries)
They need the west and even more need Russia as part of their future.
But to have troops totally take over a region is wrong on ever level.
To invade is wrong. Ukraine has many Issues, Russia only increased those
issues.
Common sense, Is not so common!
