One thing I have notice that seems missing around here sometimes is the ability not to take ourselves too seriously.

Applies to both corners.

This is true, it's only a bloody forum for Jesus Christ's sake!

We've all got strong politics, and everyone has a strong sense of patriotism so it's only natural to defend a slight against your country even if you actually agree with it! I reckon UK is going rapidly downhill submerged with immigrants but if any other national says this I can't help contradicting and natural defending the UK. Stupid!

So best to lay off it I think, Remeber if you say 'American's are stupid' that includes all your American friends, then you start making exceptions and the whole thing is better off left unsaid.

Except when it concerns the French, the Welsh, Yorkshiremen in General, batty-boys, Cristiano Ronaldo and anyone accosiated with the Portuguese football team, Manchester United (spit), any Asians except those concerned with curry and food in general.

For those unlucky enough to be able to work from home, I'm currently:

1. Typing this crap

2. Watching a documentary on telly about Isambard Kingdom Brunel

3. Listening to Neil Young's Living With War on the Mac

4. Having a brew

5. Cooking Char Sui Pork with rice and chicken with cashew nuts, smell is amazing

6. Reading 'Crime and Punishment' and 'Prestupleniy i Nakazaniy' at the same time so I can follow the Russian. Still on page 8 though.

7. Oh, err, working a bit....

Despite being a fortysomething I can still watch telly, read a book and listen to music at the same time.

Ste

its not about sensitivity, its about enough is enough.

being here in Russia has given me a different perspective on things. sometimes Americans do become to insulated in their country.

that being the case though i cant tell you how many times i hear it from the Europeans about American this or American that...as if their country has none of the same problems or their politicians arent as phoney. like i said enough already.

i talked to many ex-pats (or i used to, i dont so much anymore because of this fact) and i can tell you that the English are BY far the worst in this respect. and i ask the same question over and over...why?

if is isn't a direct insult, then its some backhanded swipe, i suppose its to make your ego feel better, who knows. my point is the same, get over it, whatever IT is.

i remember one time i got into an arguement with some Euros who insisted it was GW Bush who was to blame for the attack on the school in Beslan as an example of how far this is taken.

take a look at the board for proof and see who cracks who and about what...innocent or not.

let me give you this as an analogy...i like BBQ chicken very much, but if i eat it everyday i get sick of it, and quite frankly being here close to Europe, i know I'm sick of all the anti-American BS i hear, mostly from the Europeans. hell the middle easterners i meet aren't as bad. most believe it or not, are quite nice to me.

to be honest, the Russians say way, and i mean, way more positives things than negative about America and Americans than all the Euros combined, and i have talked with hundreds of Russians (GW Bush notwithstanding).

again, make your point here and move on. nobody cares about your personal point of view, especially to Americans about Americans. i can assure you that if i continued to constantly crack on any of you, even the little cutesy remarks that many of you make without a glimmer of fact, you get sick of it over time. nobody likes to hear BS ALL THE TIME...no one!!!

of course there is good and bad people everywhere, just enough with the cheap shots already, its tired rhetoric.

in the meantime, i think ill cook me some BBQ chicken. good luck and peace out.

While I agree with everything you say above I have to also voice my disappointment regarding the WELCOME made to us on this board.

Oh yes we can create a UK based board in 1 hour but why bother when there is one here running already with many members?

Don't forget the Britts are very reserved and don't like talking publicly about personal matters!

The slightest criticism of an American poster and everybody is coming out blazing guns.....and you calling Americana's friendly folk?
We are here because we like to read other peoples experiences and of course post our views too!

We all learn from one another..... but in general I am disappointed with the attitudes coming from USA.
Not to worry coming through Gatwick. Just PM and I will come down (only 10 minutes away) to start shooting you.......with English beer! Any Time!

I suggest you reread the opening post and jb's response to same.  How is referring to a Brit as a "Limey" any different than referring to an American as a "Yank?"  There are many Americans that are uninformed and inexperienced with the rest of the world in general, but the membership here does not fall into that category.  For the most part, the membership here is quite a bit more worldly than the average American.

I love the international flavor of this forum, even though the majority here here American.  Even some of the European members are just transplanted Americans.  I won't ask for forgiveness when we react to "some backhanded swipe" (as chivo said), but also don't you sit there and tell me that the offense was unintended or imagined.  There were many "digs" at Americans peppered throughout the original post and through out the subsequent posts.  They didn't go unnoticed.  The American membership here will not sit ideally by and allow our country and culture to become a punching bag for your British amusement.  If you are counting on us to be politically correct, you're mistaken.  I am sure your country has many good and bad characteristics just as ours does, but this is not the forum for those conversations.  This is suppose to be a sort of brotherhood of men interested or involved with Russian women. Start acting like it.

That was exactly my reference point, I'm glad it wasn't lost entirely.

Back when I was traveling to the UK frequenty on speaking trips I often had Brits try to out wit me on just about anything.  Some were very clever but most fell far short of the mark.  On one such trip I was being chided by a group of Brits about American cars and how English made cars were so much better and even got 20% better gas milage.  That went on until I reminded them that the UK Imperial gallon was 20% bigger than a US gallon, and the reason the English drink warm beer was because Lucas Electric made their refrigerators.

After that I began to get a little respect.

To be fair jb the mileage point was valid. In the 80's I was the proud owner of a 1975 Cadillac Fleetwood Talisman, 500ci, 8200cc to us Brits, and I got as low as 6mpg (UK gals). The best I got was about 10mpg. As for better made, the door bottoms fell out of it! And this was, we were told, the American Rolls-Royce. My dad's Sierra Deisel Estate was doing 50mpg+....

The funny thing was with the Caddy, my uncle asked me to collect a pedal operated sewing machine in it, cos I had the huge car, and it wouldn't fit in the boot. Too shallow. We ended up gettin it easily into a Nissan Micra.....

Having said that we had the Austin Allegro, the Morris Marina, all more than capable of rusting away in a light shower. I also had a Volvo 360Gle, tiny car, never got more than 23mpg out of that, weighed a ton....

Ahh, the money I've wasted on cars, I feel another American car phase coming on! I always wanted a 1964 Cadillac Convertible, I did have a 63 Convertible, not quite the same. I was inspired by the movie 48 Hours, and Another 48 Hours, featuring a 64 Conv.....

Also I had two 73 Sedan de Villes.....

Now Ste,
The 70's were not a very good time for quality in American cars!  Most all were crap until America woke up to the Japanese quality standards.  But you certainly do not want to compare the quality of British autos with American now, do you? ::)

Now Momma,
How can it be possible when I know my wife is the prettiest and smartest? ::) I'll concede the cooking even though she can give your daughter in law a run for her money when the mood to cook strikes her too.  It just that the "mood" doesn't hit her with any consistency! ;D

I really don't mind some kibitzing back and forth with our British brothers in the least, but I just don't like when they act all indignant when their "digs" are returned in kind.

The 300 is one of the hottest sellers here right now.  I just rented one in Detroit a few weeks ago and have to say that I was very impressed (especially with the Hemi engine).  Look for the new Chrysler Sebring to be the next hot car.  It has been restyled to look similar to the 300 and has some very nice creature comforts too.

Back in the 60's and 70's I was very fond of BMC cars.  I've owned 2 Austin Healey's 100's and 3000's, 2 MG's, (a '54 MG-TF and a 75? MGBGT), 1 Triumph TR-3, 1 Jensen-Healey, a Jag XK-140 and a Jag XKE-150, (both were coupes, I'm not fond of convertables) and, of all things, a Goliath mini-van outfitted for camping.

I probably know more about Lucas Electric automotive componets than any other American alive.  They were crap.  If you bought an English car, you were going to leak oil and have electrical problems.

I loved those old junkers.

I'm glad there are no trans-Atlantic nuclear missile launch buttons on this board, otherwise the discussion would have ended quite some time ago.

Or maybe that would have been a good thing.

Some of the exchanges in this thread are of the most puerile, pathetic nature I've ever seen. And coming from supposedly grown men. One of them even looks like bloody Santa Claus.

"My country's better than your country, Russians love us more, our cars are better, nyah-nya-nya-nya-nyah-nyah..."

I'm not taking sides here. I despise both sides equally. I won't get into the politics behind that. The original post (which this topic has gone faaar away from) actually, get your heads out of the sand folks, just about reflected the way Russians see the whole foreigner-seeking-Russian-women thing.

Someone noted that a lot of people here seem heavily insulated from Russia, and real life there. From reading through threads I'd say this was largely true. To the person who said Russians prefer Yanks to Brits... strange, when they talk to me they like Brits more. I wonder what they tell the French...

But it's interesting to note that in my time here a couple of Russians have only spoken to me when they found out I wasn't American. Let's not go into the fact that when they find out I'm neither American, nor English, nor German, they actually start to look interested.

To that poster though - I entirely sympathise re. avoiding foreigners. Something about Russia seems to attract all the weirdoes, don't you find that? I've found only a handful of 'normal' foreigners while I've been here.

From reading other posts it seems easy to see why there are some people on this board who have found marital bliss and some who ask which magic words they have to say to get a Russian girl's clothes off.

Could it be, as someone said, that people are taking themselves way too seriously? How about dropping the 'might is right' stance on both sides?

This site and the forum are about Russian Women, and discussion about them.

Now, when my girlfriend wanted to know what I was writing about when I started a thread a while back, I explained what the site was about.

I, personally, take a pretty dim view on certain western attitudes to Russian women that are evident among certain Western visitors to SPb. Whether by good fortune or good management, Dan has created a board which seems not to cater much for those types, otherwise I wouldn't be here cultivating friendly shoulders to cry on when my girlfriend goes on her next trip to the hospital with a bellyful of sleeping tablets.

But the childishness, the anti-Britishness, the anti-Americanness... it's all over the place.

I ask you this:

What place do our countries' politics have in discussions about Russian Women?
Warning: Events in the past may catch up with you!

I too had a Jag prior to the Ford purchase.  The beautiful and classic exterior belied the the outdated interior and the terrible over all quality.  The inside of that car was similar to cars 15 to 20 years older.  But it sure looked great from the outside! ;D

Lucas Electric was in Burnley wasn't? Simonstone?

You're right about electrics, Ford Escorts from the 70's wouldn't start if it was raining, which let's face it, is most of the time here....

My dad had a series of Austin Cambridges, Morris Oxfords, Triumph Heralds and a Sunbeam Stiletto. All crap. My dad was a total Amerigophile, and got me into 'Yanks' as we call American cars here. He is solely responsible for wasting all my cash!

He was an engineer, got a job in 1967 for GE in Boston MA, but me mum bottled it and we never went. My dad never got to the States, and when the wheels of the DC-10 hit the ground at Logan with me on it I shed a tear or two for the old man.

I drove past West Lynn where we were going to live, but, not 100% confident in turning off the freeway I didn't risk it. I'll tell you what though, American cars do have soft suspension, the Ford Explorer I was driving didn't half squeal on the curvy road onto the Freeway (on ramp?) I was only doing forty.

I was driving a Buick Regal coupe a while back. Changed it for a Renault but as I know some guys here hate the French I am now driving a Jaguar. Now if someone could convince our government to put the same tax on gas as the US I would be a very happy guy  ;D But I still want that Volga some day  :P

We have 3 vehicles here now, my 2000 GMC full sized, 1/2 ton, which I use for pulling the fishing boat to and from the bay, and any other hauling jobs we have need for, rarely used for commuting.  The wife has a 2004 Toyota Camry, sort of the "teacher wagon", a very nice Geezerettka-mobile, which gets good gas milage too. And last, but not least, the kidlet drives a 2003 Nissan Maxima.

I am glad this conversation has turned around ...................

Now women & cars are favorite subjects on both sides of the pond!  ;D

As Ste said above, I have a Chrysler 300C (how anti american is that?  :D) - You yanks may be surprised how much US metal gets over to the limey side of the pond  ;)

As a teenager I was the proud owner of a (77 I think) Pontiac Grand Prix LJ 2 door 6.6 - the girls loved it!  ;D It was followed by a Oldsmobile Delta Royale 88, A Chevy Caprice, a few Mk3 Mustangs, (we all make mistakes) - and 2 odl cadillacs, a de ville and a fleetwood have graced the Manchester stable over the years. Oh and yes (as Shadow) I had a Buick Regal too (Must have thought I was Kojak - It was the same colour but I have more hair)

Later I moved onto Jaguars (always reparing them - crap!) and then onto Mercedes that I had for many years, my last S Class (yr 2000) was SO unreliable that I was looking for a new direction, so I ended up in the 300C! (still sort of a Mercedes and the customer service is just as bad)

In the north of England (I am sure Ste will confirm) US pick up trucks are making a big impression now, there are little independant dealers popping up selling Dodge Rams and Ford F's etc and also the new Mustang looks pretty hot and people are buying those here (my lady is making noises about one of those after the 300C warranty expires - very Russian I pointed out - she laughed)

And Shadow - I too have thought of bringing back a Volga, they are very cheap and must have a market in the UK (and Holland) as a quirky Rooski vehicle!
