Cell phones in Omsk
« on: March 23, 2005, 03:24:17 AM »
All -

My lady just found out that she has to pay for incoming calls - we blew her monthly phone allowance within a couple of days.  Whats with that?  Does anyone know if there is more than one cell-phone provider is Omsk, Russia?

Kevin

ps.  This is not a scam on her part.

Yes, in most countries receiving phone calls on cellphones some charges also go to the recipient of the call.  Ukraine is an exception.

Yeah, we must pay when we get incoming calls from abroad. How much...? It depends on what mobile provider (operator) and tariff you have.

But if your woman has home phone - she will get your calls for free. Such a paradox is here, in Russia. :(

It is more easy to check this about local provider locally, in Omsk. We have different providers in different parts of Russia. In most tarifs we need to pay for incoming calls, but for example Megafone has tariff where you can get calls for free.

With international call from other cell phones' companies you always should pay for all income calls. The only one way to escape this ( to my mind, but this advice should be checked in cell-phone company office) is to buy some tarif in Omsk for youself and for your girl with free of pay in-comes (like Jeans ), pay for  international rouming and use that tarif for calls to Russia. Then all in-come call for your girl would be free-of-pay

Are you sure, MTS Jeans tariff will work abroad?

When one of my American friends visited me - he bought MTS Jeans tariff HERE to talk to me HERE. But when he was back to the States he didn't use this tariff.

If Goombah buys any of Russian tariff to use it abrod: 1. He MUST visit cell operator office HIMSELF here to open the roaming option. 2. This option will coast him a fortune if he uses it abroad. He will send money to his girlfriend every week - to put it on his cell account.

Every Russian cell operator has Website. His girl must visit the site of her cell operator to check all and ask her questions. Every site has English version - he can visit it, too.

yeah.....

the magic word roaming. but the person who wants to activate this option must visit them PERSONALLY with his/her passport.

For example, MegaFon Moscow allows to activate this option by sms. But MTS insists on visiting them to activate roaming option.

one short addition. if you have MTS you will not be allowed to call abroad without visiting them to activate this option.

Read the information posted on their site.

Well I told you should check the idea to get fre-of pay in-come calls for your girls in cell-phone company offices. Any way the only way to do that is to have two cell phones with tarifs of the same cell-phone company . How to get that is the second question wich is better to be solved by consultation with company's specialists

Call her home number - she will get all your calls for free then. My friends from the States buy special card for calls abroad (it costs $5) and have 2 1/2 hours to talk to Russia.

Kevin, when you return I hope you will be our new "most current knowledgeable person" about Omsk.

Some cell providers do allow for incoming calls to be free. I have heard, but do not know for sure, that their was or has been some cell providers in Russia who did not charge for incoming calls.

The Ukraine parliment/goverment, because of the tremendous amount of profit going to Kutchma's son-in-law (I think) who owned one of the major cell providers, maybe Kiev Star, indicated their was SO much profit they forced the cell providers to make incoming calls free. This happened about one or one and a half years ago.

Thanks all, I'll pass the megafon suggestion onto her.

She does not have a home phone, and has always just used her cell.  How expensive is it to get her one?  There would be other advantages perhaps as well - like she could have Internet access in her home.  If these are reasonable, it could be something I could pay for.

Why sure Kevin, go ahead and buy her a cell phone, send her the money and let her get a good cell phone so you guys can talk.

And how did your meeting with her go?  Oopps, forgot, you haven't met her yet?

Kevin, this is some of that crazy stuff you see people write about. Sending expensive gifts, money, to someone you have never. Yea, I know, she is probably the one, why not. I just think you could be possiably setting yourself up for this to be expected again, and maybe again. Why do this? Your proving to her how much you care about her? She is going to see you anyway, if you do this or not, right? I think this is not wise to do with a person you have never met.

I doubt she would be abble to get Internet at home if she (really) hasn't even phone line there.

( The most commonly used acssec to Internet here is through phone lines (dial-up modems or ADSL modems) Isolate internet line is too expencive here and is not available anywhere.

What's "one" - a sell phone or some tarif plan for it?

Jack -

Its T-minus 3 weeks until we meet.  I would be surprised if she could arrange for a land line in that time.

Elen -

By "Internet access", I presumed dial-up.  Here in the USA, you must pay a provider to give you Internet access.  How is it in Russia?

I suspect we will just use her parents phone for chats.  That will restrict the hour a bit, since she only goes there in the evenings and I've been calling her in the mornings, but would be workable.

Anyone -

Any clue what the tarrif rates might be?  We have not talked money, being rude to do so, but wonder if our 15 minutes calls were costing something like $1.50, or 10 times that?

Kevin

Here you at first place have to got a phone line at home, wich is put at your disposal by local phone station. (the resourses of these local phone stations are limited therefore some people have not phone line at home) Internet provider doesn't montain phone lines in your home.( Well there are now some private phone companies in Moscow which can bring phone line to your flat but it's very expencive and I doubt it's possible in Omsk)

After you get a phone line you buy yourself a modem and internet card of some provider. (the most reasonable dial-up tarif to my mind is ROL-20 (Rossia on line for 20$) - 40 hours of internet access in prime time and free-of pay access from 2AM to 9AM during one month.

But ADSL modems are more better ( your phone line is free when you are in Internet) and you have unlimitted internet access for the same 20$ per month ("Stream" tarif) I use "Stream"

Thanks Elen -

We too have ADSL, it is normally much faster than dial-up as well, but cost most per month.

Thanks for the information!

  Стоимость звонка: 2,41 (0,92(МСС)+1,49)

1,49$ for USA + ~0,92$ for local income call = 2,41$ for 1 minute (MCC tarifs)

If I got that right from information at it's site in Omsk ( I may be wrong and she has not to pay "american" constituent.  Ask somebodu else:?)

Kevin, wait untill you meet in real. I mean nothing bad, I just have my own opinion about this subject: I never accept gifts, money or something else intill I see this person in real. His visiting Russia will be the proof of his serious expectancies.

Why do I think so? Coz many men from abroad send gifts, flowers and etc. to their Russian women. After that they visit them, find out that there is no chemistry, and when they are back home from Russia they start blaming all Russians - I spent money, I did this and I did that but she didn't appreciate all. And bla-bla-bla...

Internet access is not as cheap here as it's in the States but I must say I do not earn billions and I have Internet access at home. Before starting to seek Mr. Right I was sure I had all what was needed for that - home PC, Internet and a good knowledge of English language.

I live very close to Moscow and here if you want to have a home phone you just pay $500 and you'll get it.

Cell phones have different prices here - from $30 till hundreds of dollars.
