NFL vs The Russian Girl
« on: December 16, 2006, 06:42:09 PM »
Actually it's NFL vs Ukraine girl at my house.

All women are different I know, some like sports, some like to play, but hate to watch, some like to go to a real game but hate watching on TV, etc.

Nataly is not a fan of football. She liked going to a baseball game with me, she watched Ukraine in the World Cup with me, but in general sports on TV is like pulling teeth to her. To her credit, she "lets" me watch anyway, and I try not to abuse it, there is A LOT of football on TV this year, Thursday night, Sunday (day and night) Monday night, and now Saturdays! I try to limit myself to Dallas games, because I'm a die hard fan, but watch the big games too. As a compromise I "let" her watch "Sex and The City"  :)

This is more of a girl thing, than a RW thing, but I wonder if some of the married guys have this issue. At the moment the Cowboys are playing the Falcons, and I'm headed home. She is going to be in for a surprise, Saturday Night Football! I think I'm in trouble  :-\  ;D

Let's be honest, I'm just looking for away to talk about football, are there any fans here? What's your team?

My team has traditionally been whoever is playing Dallas.  I've kept pretty silent about that this year as I'm now just down the road from where they are building their new stadium and I want to return with at least a few of my own teeth.
In Simferopol, all we get is soccer, which bores me to tears, some tennis and the occasional NBA game which is a replay from 6 months or so back.  Even if I wanted to watch sports here, I'm outnumbered by my wife and her daughter and I think if they ganged up on me they could take me.  It is interesting to see that "Sex and the City" is shown here on the local channel.  You can imagine the image of America and American women that this gives them here!

Raised in the land of Lambeau. My blood flows green and gold. I remember quite well the ice bowl game. A true classic! The great Jerry Kramer block on the goal line. Sorry Cowboy fans! I'm still a big fan, but dissapointed over the last few years. It would be great to see Favre break Marino's record against the team we hate the most. Da bears.

I felt that way also about Dallas for the longest time. I love the line from "King of the Hill" when he told his wife (who was going to Dallas for something) (and forgive me for not having the exact word but only the gist) "Dallas! Dallas is filled with Pimps, Drug Addicts, and Rapists, and half of them play for the Cowboys!"

I had some hope for them when the Tuna took charge, then they got another class act in Bledsoe (yeah,he hasn't been great but the influence is there) then they got the biggest asshole, me, me, me, always me player in sports so now I am back to rooting for anyone playing Dallas.

I may live in Texas . . . but I've been a Cheesehead since the first Super Bowl.  Before it was even called that!

Favre is the best QB the Pack has had since Starr.  Arguably the best QB ever.  I just wish he had more help out there these last coupla years.  :-\

The memories of announcer Ray Scott during the glory days of the Packers. No one could announce a game like him. 12 NFL championships, 3 Super Bowls, 3 NFL championships in a row, achieved twice (29-31 and 65-67) No other team has done it once. Not bad for a franchise located in a city of 85,000. Sorry it's the green and gold thing. Never mention football to a packer fan.  ;D    On a funny note, my brother's boss owns the house Lombardi use to live in. Every few years he has to chase people off the property who are trying to steal a chunk of his yard.

My wife is basically the same about football.  She always says that she doesn't mind if I watch football, but 5 minutes later, she says can't we watch a movie or something else.  But she does like to watch basketball.

For the favorite football team, even though I live in Colorado now, I grew up in Denver, so I am a Saints fan.  I watch the Broncos most weekends, but don't really care if the win or lose though.

Even better, I like college football better and love the LSU Tigers.  Even living in Colorado, they are on national TV usually 5 to 7 times a year, so I get to see them in a lot of games.  Like the SEC as a whole.

I live in Tampa and the Bucs are my team.   ENOUGH SAID.  I think the Saints fans should send us those paper bags they wore over their heads for so many years when they called themselves the Aints.

OK sports fans, here's my story.  A devoted Detroit fan in all sports until this years version of the worst NFL team ever fielded (the Lions).  No one could make worse player decisions than Millen if they tried.  Last year they pulled out a last second victory against New Orleans to move their draft choice from #2 overall to Ernie Sims?  WTF? Pass on Lienart, Cutler and Brees for Kitna?  WTF?  Pass on Saun Merriman for Mike Williams (who has only dressed for 2 or three games this year)  WTF?  Top ten overall choices of Joey Harrington and Charles "Smokey" Rogers (who is out of football) speak for themselves.  Last week Garcia and Harrington were slinging and winning for their new teams and Altose Pinner ran for 125 yds and 3 TD's against the Lions for the Vikings.  (Pinner was released because he wasn't good enough for the Lions and now their top 3 RB's are out for the year)

This Thanksgiving was the end of the Lions ever being my team.  I went out and bought Charger hats for my me, my son and Lena.  Go Chargers!  I'll still root for the Tigers. Wings and Pistons til the day I die.  (Yes I stuck through the 119 game losing season for the Tigers)  I was telling everyone that would listen that they were building the best pitching staff ever assembled.

Lena has come to enjoy American football.  She loves the way they crash into each other and especially loves when LT leaps over the pile at the goal line.  But she also prefers Michigan college football games to the pros.  We both watched this years MLB playoffs with great anticipation and now hates the Yankees as much as I do!  Piston playoffs are also interesting to her.  We really don't get into the Wings all that much (except to bust Dan's chops when the Wings kill Dener yet again) which is kind of interesting to me.  When Lena first arrived the Wings were still full of Russian players even though Federov was gone and she was never too interested.  Although she did enjoy the game we attended but refused to cheer in Russian!  The real game we attended at Comerica Park in Detroit was a bore to her at the time.

Sex in the City was kind of a flop in Russia according to some articles I have read about it.  Lena loves the show though.  She is always using the characters as a reference to her friends.  She is a "Miranda type" would be a typical reference.  The box set of DVD's has been well viewed and passed around to all her girlfriends. (hint hint Jinx)

In my wife selection process, certain issues were key, including:

1) likes dogs better than cats;

2) dosen't smoke;

3) loves and participates in sports!

Vik is watching Amercan football with me and enjoying it. Since she is a soccer and basketball and boxing fan, I'm not surprised.

But sometimes she does distract me during games  ;)

Being from the Pittsburgh area like every man, woman and child here over the age of one I am a diehard Steeler fan.

I have to say I liked VWRW's attitude about it.  In one of our many long and deep discussions I mentioned that I wanted to spend my free time with her but one thing I would really like to keep is to continue to watch the Steeler games.  I said everyone in this area goes crazy over them and that for the week following the games half of all the conversations are about last weeks game and if I didn't watch them I would be left out of all the conversations.

She said, "I guess I will have to learn to like American football and to be a Steeler fan.  I would not want to be left out of all the conversations."

I am somewhat worried.  I will be away on vacation with a RW during Bowl season.  Early on in our little journey, my favorite team will have a bowl game and I already found a bar that will televise it.  This is very important to me, not only did i attend school there but i've been a die hard fan, season ticket holder + some road games every year.  I even planned my trips to FSU around the season (during bye week and after last game) so its a serious obsession.

As far as I can figure, there cannot be compromise in the matter, I need my few days a year.  If she puts up a fuss about watching the bowl game, that's it, game over for her.

For me it is expected to watch sports - though my wife uterly depises baseball and can not see what I like about it.  Her dad plays and watches sports every chance he gets so I have a good role model.  Thats pretty much all he really likes to talk about when I am in Russia as well.  Go Giants (coaching problems and injury problems), Mets (no pitching), Rangers (old over-rated team), Kincks - if you count this freak show as a sport.   By the DKMM, bring the girl to the bar while you watch the game, or let her go to sleep early.

I have an interesting situation, my girl will be here in January, God willing (interview this coming Thurday 12/21).  She has a 10 year old boy who has never seen a football or baseball game.  My Daughter (12) is a big sports fan and will be very jealous of the Julia and Andrey.  I guess the good news is that I am a Jet fan and they usually Suck.

How about baseball....Will the Yankees get back to the World Series this year????

Heck, No Way!!!!   Their chances are not any better than my Pirates this year.  Maybe next year in 2007 the Yankees might.   No hopes for us either year.

Yessss, Cowboys win, and are in the playoffs! Last night I was trying to explain what playoffs are to Nataly, she nods her head 'yessss, very interesting' haha ;D

The Cowboys are a team you either love or hate, I grew up in the bay area, lots of haters here including my own family (Niner die hards) but also suprisingly many fans here too. They are like the Yankees, Red Wings, Lakers, they have a fan base in every city. I was 10 years old when they won the Super Bowl against Denver, Roger Staubach was my childhood hero, not to mention Drew Pearson, Tony Dorsett, and the Doomsday 'D'. Aikman and Emmitt are also class acts, ok lets forget about Deon Sanders, Irvin, and T.O.  :-\  Not my type players, but you can't complain when they help you win.

KenC, So I'm guessing you're originally from Michigan...Don't give up on your Lion's, they will probably get Brady Quinn next year, they have talent, just can't get it together, I agree Millen sucks, and they should give him the boot. I'll have to ask Nataly what "Sex in the City" character she is, I'm guessing a combo of Charlotte and Carrie....man, I know way too much about that show!  ;)

Turbo, The Steelers are another team with fans everywhere, I work in retail and sell some NFL stuff at my shops, besides the local teams (49ers & Raiders) the most popular are in this order - Cowboy's, Steeler's, Miami and Green Bay. I think it has to do with their domination in the 70's, or 60's in the Packers case, not to mention there has been some really great players on all those teams.

I really want to watch the Charger's vs Chiefs tonight, LT vs LJ, should be a great game, I hope "Sex and the City" is on tonight, otherwise I'm going to be in trouble  :P

No wonder you guys put on so much weight over Christmas... Your football games go for SO long!

I've only been in North America once when the Superbowl was on and I was taken to a bar by a friend.  We started off with some snacks and a few beers and as the game continued so did the snacks and beers.

I have to tell you by the end of the game you could have rolled me out of the bar because I was SO full...  then again it's almost impossible to roll someone who's stonking drunk!!!

It was a great day from what I remember...

Gator, I was about to comment on Test Matches taking 5 days but deleted that line.

When you go to a cricket match it's like going to the beach for the day...  the sun is out, you're just hanging out with your mates checking out pretty girls in bikini tops, the zinc is on the nose and the hats are on, a few beers and an icecream around noon...

The only thing you don't have is the sand, surf, the smell of a salty breeze and long drive home!

Of course this is the Oz version of cricket.  If you're watching in England you could be spending long stints under an umbrella listing to the fans whining about Warnie being the best bowler of all time...  (That should get Mir going)  ;)

Yeah Kuna, the games are long, I think that's the main complaint my g/f has, if I were to watch 2 games on Sunday, that's about 6-7 hours of TV time, and if your at a sportsbar watching, that's A LOT of beer and snacks!

Gator, I thought the Bucs were gonna pull the upset, too bad, but Rattay looked pretty good, yep, there's always next year  ;)

Conner,
Um the Lions and Raiders are tied for the worst record, but like I said I am now a San Diego Charger fan now!  Besides, at least Oakland has won some playoff games and Superbowls.  The Lions have never been to the big game and may have only won 1 playoff game ever. No championships for over 50 years!

Personally, I never liked football. Too slow. A play lasts for all of 30 seconds then there are 3 downs. Too many penalties which causes more downtime. There is surely a lot of hanging around between plays. Gain a few yards and more downtime. Give me soccer or baseball anyday.
