Platonic love in its modern popular sense is an affectionate relationship into which the sexual element does not enter, especially in cases where one might easily assume otherwise. A simple example of platonic relationships is a deep, non-sexual friendship between two heterosexual people of the opposite sexes.[1]

At the same time, this interpretation is a misunderstanding of the nature of the Platonic ideal of love, which from its origin was that of a chaste but passionate love, based not on disinterest but virtuous restraint of sexual desire. In its original Platonic form, this love was meant to bring the lovers closer to wisdom and the Platonic Form of Beauty. It is described in depth in Plato's Phaedrus and Symposium. In the Phaedrus, it is said to be a form of divine madness that is a gift from the gods, and that its proper expression is rewarded by the gods in the afterlife; in the Symposium, the method by which love takes one to the form of beauty and wisdom is detailed.

Yes. If you read Plato’s Symposium you will see Plato did not disclaim sensuality and sexuality.
His idea was the mind has to predominate over physical sexual passion.
Reasonableness is to have control over the passions.
If your Eros (Love) to have control over the passions it means your Eros (Love) is reasonable.

Does that mean, in ur soul is persistent struggle between physical desires and striving to control them? Ur mind is trying to keep control, but someday u might not be able to do that... or u r doing that all the lifetime... and how happy r u? That called "sorrow of love".  Real Platonic love is love without any sexual desire/passion so u have nothing to control.

Dar,
if you tell me the name of Plato's work where  Plato wrote these words about Platonic love, I will send you a box of chocolate to Valentine's Day  :D

Gator’s fifth category defines the ideal of Platonic love.
The Greek philosophers admitted their attraction to youth and beauty; however they thought that instead of letting lust take over the relationship the basis of relationship will be the teaching of knowledge and wisdom to the youth. They believed that such a relationship is more satisfying then a sexual one. Of course the gender that attracted them was male rather then female and there has always been the argument that such love is not possible between a man (and a much older man by definition) and a young and pretty woman.

I believe that platonic love exists but it is a gift and Platonic love is very specific, I doubt one can experience  platonic love with many people...... and with time this Platonic love can grow into real sexual love , especially if you see this person like everyday , you know him alive, Platonic love can be widely spread in internet dating:):P

yeah it exists  in those ways how the other people described it using very smart philosophical books but, Life differes from philosophy completely , philosophy gives only the way  but not how to do this  or that , in philosophic books you only read the  statements which are actually not very good proved in the books and life leads you in every possible step you make to get to that statement for example , so I see no reason to talk so much about which philosopher said what about this topic.:)

Better tell me how you feel about Platonic love what do you think it is? that would be much more interesting:)
As for me I experienced Platonic love only to one person my old friend and I should say it is a special feeling ,  but it seems to me we were talking about different thing about Young women being happy with old guys:) so back to the topic Honestly I do not believe in mutual platonic love of this union as Old guy would definitely want to have sex with this young woman , though she of course can love him only with platonic love as he is such an interesting person.....but eventually he will make her sleep with him am sorry for this , but that is true

And also to my mind Platonic love it is something of a confusing love and friendship, if you love this person with platonic love you should not marry her or him that wont lead to a prosperous marriage at least I think so.

Jazzyclassy,  :)
If you speak about Platonic love you pronounce the name of great philosopher. The Platonic love is the philosophical conception. If you want to use this conception you should know the works of the philosopher, his philosophical world outlook (Weltanschauung).

This philosophical conception - Platonic love in mediocre interpretation can be used in real life:
- when you talk about love to homeland  :)
(but after all what Russian Government has done with Russian people, according the low of honour, Russian Government have to marry Russian people)
- when you talk about love to your relative  :)
(but we know about cases of incest)
- when you talk about two very sick people who can not to make love.

'when you talk about two very sick people who can not to make love'

It has to be more then that as not able to make love is not the same as not having the desire to make love.
You would have to remove their sexual organs, gonads and the pituitary gland to achieve this (a bit like the operation in Bulgakov's 'Heart of a dog' but in reverse!)

But some Sharikovs from Bulgakov's 'Heart of a dog' in Russian Government should to be castrated till their neck.

well sure never a problem but I thought I already told my point of view , no need to teach me here thank you:)

I thought we were talking about down to earth methods , if you are talking philosophy  here do it properly give us  a lesson or whatever you call it:)))

Throwing some smart phrases makes an impression of a very strange personality;)

Talking philosophy of love , you are talking about not real world really. Studying philosophy for 2 years at the University made me believe  that each person creates his own according to this or that movement of scientists , so pointing at me that I did tell something wrong about Platonic love makes me laugh a little :) and you were mentioning some very pervert things about platonic love:

but forgive my ignorance I might be completely without sense of humour today:))

All philosophy can be divided into two parts: before dinner and after  ::)

Every Platonic love has the own doctor Sigmund Freud.  ;)

There are not teachers and students on this forum  :)
Education is not name of  State institutions it is just the knowledge which we can use in our real life.
We live in the real world and we say about real things.
Picking the smelling sweet flowers we should not forget about a sh-t that can be under the feet.
Of course we don't like to think about it, but a sh-t is a part of real life too :(
Sometimes the youthful  idealist  philosophy disagrees with the philosophy of life .
What a pity!

Olga.

This is all cute.  A true man of his times Plato bestowed his Platonic love upon many young boys;  so maybe you can all ditch the Plato hogwash.  If ya'll really want to talk about Plato this is probably the wrong froum.   ::)tim360

Oh, tim360
You are right  :)
My teacher in Academy was very nice person with a good sense of humour. He  began his first lecture with word - My dearest ladies, women and Philosophy are incompatible things but the women always have been a good food for minds of philosophers. Adam got to know the first "good"  and first "bad" with the appearance of woman with her inexplicable mind. Before it he was very happy man, after - he became  philosopher".  :)

Rather strange sense of humour:P

But anyway I gotta continue breaking the ice and want to tell a few words about my impressions of this forum so far ;D ;D ;D

Really very nice place and  very funny and almost my level of friendliness:)) I hope people will be more friendly though

So not much to say about the site as am very new to this particular forum , I hope to be active here:)

Also I felt a little not at home here, as there are a lot of people who sit here for ages probably ,so they know things about each other in details so they talk with them in their own special language with some funny insults as how they think:)) I suppose  , also maybe my level of English is rather poor so that I can not get flat jokes at all , It's not funny really:P:P:P
But am sure my English will improve and I will understand:)))

And I am very confused with the man who calls himself Olga:) am sorry  but it is true !

Hooray I broke the Ice finally:)!
