I don't know where you live, but if an Eastern European who won immigration via the DV lottery were the biggest immigration problem in my community I'd shout for joy!  A whole year's worth of DV visa winners is matched in just five days by those who don't put their name in for a legal visa..they just come on in anyway and help themselves to whatever's in the fridge.

Did you see the URL I've posted?    DV lottery invites specific professions into the country, versus "family reunion" brings anybody and everybody.   See the difference? 

I know there are professional requirements for the DV lottery, but either there's a way around them or there not enforced as strictly as some people think.. otherwise only a tiny portion of the winners would be getting into the country, and AFAIK that's not the case..

I, personally, know (though forums) only few DV winners from FSU, but all of them have professions that let them start anew in US pretty much soon after arrival.   I also have read about some DV winners from Russia that wouldn't even leave Russia because they were not sure about their future in US.

I'm sure they do.. Most people have skills of one sort or another that would allow them to get a job in a place like the US, where there are more jobs/job types than anywhere else in the world.. My argument, however, is that in the DV program skills are not as important as the nationality(and health, in some cases) of the participants, and as a consequence more mediocre people 'get lucky' each year than 'people of outstanding ability', or whatever they call them, do in a decade.. In what world does that make sense?.

Yeah, I know, but what do we do the scientist/professor types who are trying to get into the country?.

Last I checked, all DV lottery winners were subject to a physical before they could enter the US.. Things like AIDS and TB used to be deal breakers, but I'm sure that's changed now..

Possum, in any high developed society there is an abundance of well-trained and high-skilled individuals. On the other hand there is a lack of workers who want to do simple and dirty jobs. To fill that gap, the society needs people who are not academics or have specialized skills.  There are not that many needed, and the society has enough already.
As a result, there are ways to attract the lower and middle class workers. One way is by not guarding the borders to receive immigrants that will do the lowest paid jobs. Another one is by giving chance to people who are not educated, but are willing to work hard for their future.
America was built on immigrants, and not the intellectual type of them. Instead everyone who was having trouble to make a living but was willing to take a risk and work hard was invited. There were many immigrants who did not have a job at home, never went to any school or were running from the law. These were the people who built a country, while the intellectuals were sitting in their comfortable castles in Europe.
Instead of being envious of those people, forget your brains and intellect and start to work.

There were many immigrants who did not have a job at home, never went to any school or were running from the law.

Or were indentured servants (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indentured_servant), or convicts (subsequently shipped off to Oz after the 1775 'troubles' ).
