Shadow, I think you may have misread Ronnie's post. It said xyz......... and most firmly reached out to the west. Even that I am not sure about, but I think you may have missed a part.

I/O I am not sure if Ronnie supports this crap or not. Anyway it is far too dangerous to let such propaganda go unnoticed. It is a cheap shot trying to portray Russia as the bad guy the US needs so badly at this time to try and get over their own trouble.

After watching the press conference with RU and Finnish foreign ministers it's going to be a tough day at the State Dept.  If only half what the RU Foreign Minister said is true, including some details of calls between him and Condoleezza Rice, she has a hell of a lot of explaining to do, not to mention that it made her look like a gossip queen.  Bush may be one of the least informed on this planet, prodded by a bunch of amateurs.

Hope y'all over there get to see the full press conference.

I'm amused at how some people are willing to accept either side's story as completely true.. Has recent history taught you nothing at all?. In 2003 we were told that that Saddam Hussein had to be taken out before he got a chance to use weapons of mass destruction that he allegedly had in his possession.. As you well know they were never found, and there has been much speculation as to why.. Some say there were no WMDs while others believe they had been moved elsewhere prior to the US invasion.. One thing's for sure, we'll never know the whole story, and at the end of the day it doesn't matter because Saddam is gone and Iraq is a different country now..

Same thing could happen to South Ossetia and/or Georgia if Russia decides it can no longer 'trust' the current governments in these countries/territories.. If a pro-Russian government is established in Georgia, or if the president of South Ossetia transfers his authority to the Kremlin, who's going to care who started this war?. There will be a winner and a loser, and there won't be a damn thing anyone can do about that.. :-\

A strong Russia is not good for Europe.  A strong Russia is not really a problem for the USA.  Look what is happening to the Euro right now and what is happening to the $.  Longterm this will be bad for EU.  But the EU is not very good for the USA.

Regarding Georgia and Russia no one will ever know the true story.  By the way Iraq war was good - muslim countries have been very quiet lately and we trained the next generation of troops in case there is more wars.  But Russia is not prepared to deal with Georgia when they fight more like terrorists in the future.  Russia is not going to lose to Georgia but will have to spend a lot to protect themselves in the future.  Russia's economy is in no shape to support this.

I do respect Russia having some balls and telling the world to go ......  They really are like the USA.  Probably why most Russian girls prefer Russian men #1, USA men #2, and the rest of the World #3.

Putin was the first president to visit USA after September 11th.  Any other country attacked Georgia, USA would have jumped in.

If you ever read the writings about nostrademus (spelling on name - predicted things) - he predicted that Russia and USA would rise again to rule the world together.

Haven't seen it, but don't have to, to know that Condoleezza Rice is absolutely unsuitable to be Secretary of State... She has always been a puppet, and merely mimics the same crap that comes out of the White House.. I don't think she has ever done anything that she has not been told to do... and there was talk of her running for President, or as a Vice Presidential candidate !! ... she's absolutely awful... I'd debate her, but it would take too long, as she would have to keep calling Washington to find out what to say... I don't know if she has the ability to have an original thought or opinion.

Only 1 avatar has been harmed in the making of this post.. and in my defense.., avatar torture is a "grey area" and has only been used in this case to extract information.. and besides, isn't golf just self induced torture anyway ?

Diverboy I have the same thing with Mrs Shadow. Since she moved to Holland and reads the Western/US opinion on Russia she has become more patriottic than she ever was living in Russia, and started to like America much less as in the past.

Yes, and this conflict will not make the US any more popular in Russia!

US having close ties to Georgia, Bush statements and Georgian troops flying home in US planes...

My feeling is that RW have a very distinctive oppinion about politics, its black or white no gray scales there! And in this case Georgia (and its US allies) are the bad guys.

Ho hum, Russia is a big bad bully, no wait a minute, Georgia is an upstart little schit who needs a lesson, no, that's not right, it's all America's fault and somehow Hitler contributed to that.

I'm surprised that Godwin's Law took so long to appear in this thread.   ;)   ;D

He knows it's useless to fight a media war until the dust settles.  Since there is really so little to report, any facts will be overshadowed by conjecture.

As typical during the haze of war, no one really has enough of the facts to really know for sure what is truly going on.  Putin, Bush, the media, even us here on this forum, only have a (small) piece of the puzzle and a short time to analyze it.  As this continues, there will be more good guys, and certainly more bad guys.

All of the issues that are presented here - Borders, sovereignty, oil, NATO, citizenship, power, are all valid parts of this situation.  But until this situation stabilizes, it is impossible for anyone to get a full grasp of the whole thing.

We can just pray that soon things will settle down, and the fighting stops, so the people involved can start to put together their world.  However it ends up looking like.   :'(

BC -- Great example.

It is easy to see that there are many problems getting accurate facts out of that situation.  Also easy to believe that the cameraman interviewed is telling the truth.  It is the path that his footage needs to take where the inaccuracies occured.  Getting the footage out of an active battle zone, through the hands of several couriers, news bureau staff, to CNN for editing, content, scripting and transmission.  Everyone trying to do it as quickly as possible.  And few of them able to recognize any city in Georgia.  If it was footage from Atlanta, Georgia, maybe someone would of recognized the error.

As I tried to say earlier, it is going to take some time to sort through it all before there is any kind of concensus of what is truly going on there.  Right now, there is little information, and be it due to ignorance (as I believe was the CNN story) or due to spin (pick your government or media outlet), every piece of information needs to be looked at with some skepticism.

ConnerVT, unfortunately the media often have no desire to correct their mistakes, made in error or on purpose.
A long time ago my father and me watched a parachute jump on the dutch zandvoort racing track. The next day the local newspaper featured a picture of that jump, but had moved the location to Switzerland.
In reply on a letter the newspaper told that the actual place where the picture was taken was not newsworthy. A rectification was, according to the editors, not needed. Since that time any pictures in the media are taken with a grain of salt.

Shadow, you are correct.

But in this case, we don't know if CNN aired a correction at a later time, updated later broadcasts with the correct information, internally acknowledged that they made a mistake, or categorically denies they ever made an error.  At least, unless you have been monitoring CNN's broadcasts 24/7, or have information from another source.

My only point was to show the difficulty of getting accurate information in a timely manner, be it caused by inadvertent mistakes, or due to intentional or unintentional individual bias.

No Kidding DB! Sveta is pretty emotional about what is going on, as she's a proud Russian. Her main worry is that this 'war' will escalate and her government will impose travel restrictions on Foreigners who's countries are aligned with NATO... :( Meaning me and Canada!
She is relieved that I am not an American. She doesn't want to end up having to defend me to her family and friends, if things deteriorate.
She describes Georgia as an FSU nation that hasn't been successful on it's own and who now wants the West to save it from collapse.

Don't worry.  The large majority of Russians I have met in my travels to Russia understand the difference between the American government and American people.  The 2003 invasion of Iraq happened during my first trip to Russia.  Many people asked me of my perspective of the event, but I do not recall anyone treating me differently because of it.

The one thing to remember: As a part of an international relationship, one needs to maintain a sense of diplomacy.  There is rarely much room for nationalism.

Here are the results so far of a CNN poll.. but of course someone will say that the FSB somehow hacked the poll..  sheesh..

Remember, we don't have soldiers anymore. We have Peacekeepers !! Yeah !! And we don't have wars anymore. We have Peacekeeping Missions! Yeah !!

Not to get too philosophical (but hey, this is free, right? :) ) but I've come to believe that war, in the regional conflict sense, is an important part of the human ecosystem, and must be allowed to play itself out, to burn itself out. The alternative is a world where regional conflicts are "not allowed" and "peace is enforced everywhere." But how is that done? What power structures globally are required to do that? Is there ever a limit to their growth and instrusion into life? And what is the only response to it? The only response to it is terror, the weapon of the weak against the strong. I think the cure may be worse than the disease. Don't forget that in Star Wars, we're all rooting for the insurgents ...
