Enough!
« on: November 16, 2008, 02:23:03 PM »
All three of these words seem to roughly mean the same thing ~

достаточно   довольно   хватит

Can any of you ladies (or fluent men) give me the lowdown on
the nuances of these three words - and how they are properly
used in situations? Are the first two, dostatochno and dovol'no,
interchangeable?

Thanks in advance,

Vaughn

Just some examples:

достаточно   довольно   хватит
(dostatochno  dovol'no khvatit)

that's enough! stop it!
I've had enough!

достаточно   довольно
(dostatochno  dovol'no)

he has stood enough of her

she is rather pretty

it's good enough

достаточно
(dostatochno)

we have quite enough bread

do you have enough of everything?

one tablet a day will be sufficient for you

it takes me only to call them for the job to be done

Olga, from your examples, it would seem:

достаточно /  довольно (adverbs) = Enough
хватит (verb) =  It suffices (It's enough)

Why a simultaneous use of both достаточно and  довольно? For emphasis? Translating literally,  достаточно  довольно хватит would sound like "It's enough enough enough" ;).

man Sandro, I was just happy to see more than one word meaning the same thing.  Like, love are the same right?  Mouse and Bat are the same right?  Fingers and toes are the same.

Why a simultaneous use of both достаточно and  довольно? For emphasis? Translating literally,  достаточно  довольно хватит would sound like "It's enough enough enough" ;).

Exactly!  ;D It's enough enough enough!!  :D

Meanings of Russian verb хватать (khvatat')

I. хватать (khvatat') - imperfective,  схватить (skhvatit') - perfective

1) snatch, seize; catch hold, grasp; grab;  snap (at)
seize / grasp smb by the hand

2) catch, seize

hold / seize him!
police are seizing everybody

3) grab
grab land

4) get
get bad marks

II. хватать (khvatat') - imperfective, хватить (khvatit') - perfective
suffice, be sufficient / enough; last out

this will be sufficient / enough; this will do / suffice
he had time enough to do...
this must last the winter
it will last him a month
enough work to last the whole day
there is plenty to do at home, too
that's enough for me, that will do for me

and "khvatit!" as Enough of that! That'll do for today!  ;D

Mouse and Bat - мышь - mysh
Fingers and toes - пальцы - pal'tsy (plural)

Sandro, nearly everytime I witness хватит being used, it's an exclamation of sorts
and one indicating frustration to a degree (sometimes heard around this household
when my better half quiets down her daughter when they "discuss" the finer points
of growing up)

Like, love are the same right?

Diplomacy, I don't claim to be the expert, but to downgrade to "like" Russians
seem to prefer using the reflexive verb NRAV-eet-sya, which reverses the thought
from, for example, "I like her" to their preferred "she is pleasing to me".

At least it differs in meaning from "love".

But I defer to OlgaH and the other ladies here on all grammar Russian...

Sounds rather like QUIT IT! or QUIET! in English :D.

Olga, you didn't answer my question on the two adverbs :(. Are they used together in a single sentence, or did you offer them together as alternatives?

man Sandro, I was just happy to see more than one word meaning the same thing.
Dips, you should have gathered by now that I'm rather interested in matters linguistic ;).

Oh, sorry.

The two adverbs ("dovol'no" and "dostatochno") are synonyms. They are not used together in single  sentence  :)

Yes, it is used as we would "stop it!" in English or "enough already!"

Yeah Olga but I only knew about it meaning mouse.  It was pretty funny looking on the ground for a rodent, when it was a bat she was talking about.  I asked we use English words on them from now on.

One a side not I was just excited to see a wild animal other than a pigeon in Ukraine.  Crazy you could drive for days I think with very few bugs on windshield lol.  Kumar sure is around though.

Wonder when the window screen will be in vogue in Lugansk?  Are there any screens in the FSU?

From one of our first phone conversations.

- Robert, do flying mouses live  near your home?
- What?
- mouse with wings...

My son started to laugh. He ran to living room and brought video "Batman"

Oh, Robert... not flying mouse...it is batman... did you see "batmans" near your home?

My son just fell on the floor... "Ask him also about "supermans"!

I realized what I said and we all were laughing until tears.

Yes, Olga it seems you know exactly what I went through.  Sad part was I never saw the bat.  My trip was pigeons, lark, frog, and fish.  All of which I could see at home.  Some very nasty looking red and black bug.  It was on the trees.  I think they were stink bugs lol, oh and ants too.

I just wanted to see a  кукушка.  They say Ku Ku when they knock on the door, thought they might be all over.  Not one wild one to be found where I was lol.  Of course being in a forest may have helped.

At that point of the trip the bat was going to hit the nature all star team for the trip.  Never would have thought a mouse would have been fun to see.

After eating a pickerel that was smaller than bait I usually use.  I got to think that we are going to be waiting a while for the forest creatures to return.

On a side note, what is up with the spider web and spider in most people's home?  What does it signify?

OlgaH-I remember when I lived in Florida for several years, my encounter with the "love bugs" at a certain time of year would travel in swarms ,2 bugs attached to each making love during their short few days together and then die; unless they hit my car, thus shortening their lives and infiltrating my car radiator.  Not to mention possibly ruining a paint job.  But  what a way to go :)

zhuk pozharnik that was them for sure.  Fire Ants are all over Texas, has nothing on the nasty Ant our Aussie friends have.  http://home.iprimus.com.au/foo7/jumperant.html has real bad aggressive behavior and kills people there.  They like the suburbs too.

Olga great photos.  Looks like you have a fondness of all creatures great and small too.  Thank you for the identity of my bug sighting.  Red and black usually means they taste bad or poison an animal if eaten.  Explains why they are one of the few I saw.

I just wanted to hear the bird in person, life experience for me.  I try to focus on life experiences, as apposed to what I do not have.

The love bug that destroys paint on cars is actually not even native along with the fire ant.  The love bugs escaped from a research lab at one of your fine higher education labs.  The fire ant was probably in produce that was trucked in from Latin American.  The african killer bee was brought into Latin America for use in orchards.  The population was increased when they tried to breed with European bee.  Looks like they forgot one important thing.  The african queen hatches before European bee, and there can only bee on Queen right?  So when a queen hatches it kills the pupa of all other queens.  Net result, they bred a whole lot more African bees until someone found out.

Say what you want but everything is cool in HD, especially bugs.

Is knocking on door and saying Ku Ku only done in Ukraine?

Sandro:

Lol, great reference and serious humor points for you.  Maybe I can introduce some new flavors to him?  Clearly he does not understand the value of fish vomit.  I mean whale's is worth big money for perfume.  How could he miss Ariba lol.  Yes, I know whale is mammal just using a little poetic license.

Sandro that looks great, I will buy it for sure.  So are insects when filmed with French commentary romantic lol?  My fiance is like Olga though, except spiders and snakes she hates.  You missed explaining spiders and snakes we have in Texas.  I wanted to make sure she made an informed decision about moving here lol.  Luckily, I had her with warm winters.

On a side note, I thought you and Olga were setting me up for the listening device we call a "bug".  I expected it out of you 2 by now.  I had no idea that our Roadrunner was a member of the Cuckoo family.

I always wondered if they made nests, now I wonder if they too lay eggs in other birds nests.  очень интересный.

It is a big part of me needing a women that likes to be in Nature.  I love the outdoors, and looking for creatures I have not seen before.  I so look forward to all the firsts for them.  It is really like I will be seeing the first time I saw them again.

Bah, there is that French DNA getting me again lol.

I am hoping they are here before the King tut exhibit leaves Dallas.  It is going to be close, but that is great from what I hear.

Actually all three words have the same meaning and can be used in the SAME situation, so you can feel free to use any of it without thinking "what is better"...
Why three words?
Coming from old Russian language, when every word was built from the specific words to mean the connection to this words...
For example "dovolno" - comes from word "dovolstvo" ("happiness")
And word "dostatochno" - comes from word "dostatok" ("prosperity")

So from this you can see that it is two variants of "enough":

Dovolno - It is enough for me being happy
Dostatochno - It is enough for me having a prosperity

The Thing that can mess the meaning - the way you tell it... If you are screaming "Dostatochno!" it is already "too enough" :), the same goes to scream "Hvatit!" and "Dovolno!":

1. Too enough
2. My patience is out

Mrs.Shadow
When I read experiences I think I came from another planet or from future  :D

Dipcy, the film has NO commentary IIRC, only sound effects and background music: it's a long series of macro-shot sequences, visually fascinating and not boring at all as one might understandably suspect ;).
I am hoping they are here before the King tut exhibit leaves Dallas.  It is going to be close, but that is great from what I hear.
If you haven't already seen the exhibits, mostly from Cairo's museum, it's definitely worth seeing.
