Well, folks, I got bit. I've been talking to this chick for four months now, and even spoke with her over the phone a couple of times, but it was a scam and she got me good. Lost nearly $1,200 because she said she'd set up an apartment in Kiev for a week (I was supposed to leave on Saturday), and tickets to and from Lugansk to meet her parent and friends. Then she asked me for rent money today, because she's losing her apartment:

My Jack, i received the money , all was well, I paid for the tickets, bought the phone. Thank you, my sweetheart, i want to buy the new card, people advised me one where the sms are free. But i have the problem now. The owner of the flat i rent now, died, and his son cam and told me to move quickly as he found the buyer for the flat, he will sell the flat and will do that on Monday-Tuesday, he wants me to move quickly because on Wenesday he has the flight to Moscow and the to Siberia, he is from there. I do not know what to do. I was looking now alreday for the flats, there are of course, but all the owners want to have the payment at once for 4-6 months, at least 4, i found. And where will i now find 480 dollars for the flat? Jack, dearm where will we live:) here? Jack, what will we do? hOw now wil I move for one day? No, of course, all is possible, but the money isneeded, and you alreday spent so much. Jack, dear, please, tell e what to do?
Can i ask you to pay for my reht now? That will be my last asking as now i really see no way out. I can't leve anywhere now, i have nothing where to stay at.
Jack, please, write son to me, tell em igf you can pay now for my rent for four months. Please

That's when I got very suspicious, and started really checking around on the net. Funny thing is, she doesn't show up on a lot of sites, because I've been checking for awhile. She's slick, very slick.
I'll write some more later, but I wanted to get this up a quickly as possible

I hate it for you guy but, you had some serious flags and chose to ignore them. If she only got you for $1200, consider yourself lucky. Chances are the pics are not even the girl but some hairy assed dude. I hope this doesn't deter you from looking abroad just remember, if you don't send money, you can't be scammed.

Never, ever send money to someone you have never met.

Don't get the gal any more involved in the arangements than she has to be. Stay in a hotel the first night or two if you cannot see reasonable apartment rentals via the net. Money you save will be minsicule next to the risk you run.

At least you say you learned a lesson though so plan your future accordingly.

The fantasy has sharp edges for the unwary.

Better luck next time.

it's too bad this happened to you.  I remember reading your original post where you said you were sending her the money for the apartment and for the train to Kiev.  cardinal rule is never, never, ever send money to someone you have never met.  the other gigantic red flag was Lugansk.

just to have some fun with her/him you should send an email that you want to help her and that you have sent some more money via western union.  make up a bogus number and give it to her.  if she writes back that you did not send the money, than say you transposed one number and send the new number.

you could try to have fun at the scammers expense with funky WU numbers,
but the reality is they have seen it before ,

and even if well played, and them falling for it ,
they liklely would only be mildly amused ?
you wont upset them ,or get much revenge by wasting a bit of thier time?

afterall they already are laughing all the way to the bank with the 1200 they already received.
and working more victims, changing names ,and adjusting one of a hundred profiles or photos..

i'd use your time to meet someone sincere.
(or study white water rafting:) )

good luck with either , or both! :)

Was she from a free personal site or agency?

Hopefully, you'll also look back at the advice you received along the way as well as who was enabling you and how many warned you. You seemed pretty well-grounded and even emphatically stated that you would never send money to someone you didn't know or at least only a down payment. Several people warned you to be wary and you were going to have Eric's friend, Alex, do a driveby on her (or something). Whatever became of that? For the sake of helping others, what convinced you to ignore good sense and send her $1200?

SUCCESS! I got a calling card, I called just now, she answered, and we talked for a half hour. Hey, she DOES exist!

Coulda been worse.  You could have traveled there?  At least now you know that she/he really does exist.

Does she know, that you know, she scammed you?

turn in her full name, address, email and phone number to the Ukrainian tax office.  also fax/send them a copy of the Western Union paperwork for transfer of $1200.00.  the tax office will make this scammers life a living hell.   :P

Well baldhiker-

This is something you said in your last thread when you asked about people's opinion if this very woman is trying to scam you....

Well, gentlemen, the lady and I have both explained our sides of the story to each other, and we're gonna give it another try. We're supposed to set up phone calls starting next week. Let's see where it goes.

You received a myriad of opinions and advice including but not limited to making sure you connected with her by phone as one of the ways to insure her credibility. Length of correspondence was also one of things you were advised to use as a filtering system.

But all of that is hindsight. Now you've been through the first cycle and hopefully is a little better learned for next time..even scammers get to invent new scheme to keep up with even the most astute anti-scamming technics.

Here's another wrench I'll toss in the pot. I sent monies to 3 women I have never met before I went to Russia. The monies were to be used for airfares and travelling expense to meet me in Moscow. They all showed up and one of them is my wife today. None of them were the dreaded scammers, yet they did asked for monetary assistance to enable them to meet me.

Had I followed that creed to the letter, I would had deprived myself of the wonderful times my wife had given me since.

Common sense, instincts, and fully understanding your own situation and yourself sometimes do have its merits. Never abandon them.

Food for thought.

I did the same, 5 different women over a few years.  No scammers.

The key was becoming comfortable based on many, many phone calls.

I will add that I eliminated many based on phone calls.  Perhaps one of those would have scammed me, yet they did not pass the filters.

Then I made the biggest mistake and married the wrong woman.

In regards to the comment above about Lugansk, there are far more stories I have read about scammers from Odessa and Kherson than Lugansk. My wife is from Lugansk and everyone I have ever met in Lugansk was nice, this is not to say there are not scammers in lugansk, but Scammers are everywhere, as are nice women with serious intentions. The above comments aside one of the ten commandments was broken. Never send money to someone you haven't met.

I bet that was a lot of work for 1200!  (but then again, 1200 is alot of money for a pretty girl in bum fu$k Ukraine.)

The last time I signed up on some Russian sites, I wasted TONS of time writing to shadows.  Scam, Scam, Everywhere a Scam.  Then, I spend a couple months on the north shore of the DR, where there were tons of Russian women on vacation.  (they were hot, but every bit as bitchey and aloof as their American counterpart)

Obviously, there are success stories ... but I think online meeting is like an ice cube in hell.

cardinal rule is never, never, ever send money to someone you have never met.

My wife is telling me she would of had  nothing to do with me if I had not of sent her money for flight to Moscow, where we spent our first 3 days together   .     She would not of taken the train ,  air only.     She was testing my
character , something  she did a lot during the  first week in Moscow , she  asked for  very expensive  perfume  , I paid  , I didn't know she was testing me , until later .
My wife's friends   did same  thing  , so  , not all are scammers.

Baldhiker sorry about your loss. This all goes back to emailing for three months before the first phone call. I still believe that any woman that only wants email for correspondence for three months is a scammer. I dont buy the no phone crap either. Maybe I would believe it if she lived in Hooterville, Ukraine or Russia. But then again not really.

So I have a question for the woman. How long would you wait to give out your phone number or talk on skype with a foreign man you really were attracted too?

I've had women give me their numbers within 20 minutes of internet chat. I am not shy about asking. In my experience 90 percent are happy to give their number after chatting online within an hour of meeting. Personally I wouldnt wait for more than a week of chatting or emails before the first phone call. Just my opinion

I don't care what you say.  the rule is NEVER send money to someone you have not met.  if you need to meet them in their hometown to accomplish the mission, that is fine.  but do NOT ever, ever send money to a woman (man?) you have not met.  this has been proven over and over, that a fool and his money are soon parted.  you were a lucky exception to the rule!

I agree 100%  , however  , I was able to read her , having  life experiences  that allow me to  . And  no, she is not a scammer .

I had 5 women come to Moscow to meet with me but never sent $$ in advance. But I did make it clear that I would pay for all transportation as soon as we met. Most came by train but one was by air. Once I went to their city.

Number 6 is now my wife  :D
