Where else are you going to keep your gun?

After Dunblane ..only wack jobs and criminals might keep 'em at home..

http://edition.cnn.com/2012/12/17/world/europe/dunblane-lessons/

This is the depth of the divide between our cultures....you think it's 'normal' to keep a gun at home... We can just about 'get' the need for a farmer to have a shot gun

I read the Dunblane article.
The individual involved failed to keep his guns at home.

"Wack jobs and criminals" take weapons out into society for the purpose of mayhem and crime.

You probably mean with the exception of vineyards or olive farmers.
Yes, I meant in manufacturing, not agriculture.
Quote
Note: I tried to find some old Italian olive plantations, and I know some of them are very
old, with some of the trees well before Christ. Olive Tree of Vouves (in Crete not, in Italy)
might be the oldest among them, estimated at over 3,000 years old.
Puglie, the region in the heel of Italy, is a major producer of wine and oil, and hosts some of our oldest olive trees:

At Borgato, estimated age: 3,000 years

What would Italian food be like if it weren't for olives/olive oil?
Pressing olive oil and making wine aren't totally unlike manufacturing,
but I understand what you meant.

I've never been to that region of Italy. Just Venice and Treviso and Rome.

Actually, until after WWII - which witnessed a substantial South-to-North internal immigration - Italy was subdivided into 3 areas (to paraphrase Julius Cesar's opening of his "De Bello Gallico": Omnia tota Italia est divisa in partes tres ;D) as far as what was used for cooking/frying was concerned:

1. Most of Northern Italy: butter.
2. Emilia/Romagna: lard (unsurprisingly, this region held the record for cardiac failures ;)).
3. Central/Southern Italy: oil.

In the North oil was used only as a condiment (for salads, etc.) since it was comparatively expensive, coming from distant areas.

It's parts, rather ;). Old Julius liked his parties, but made no mention of them in his book ;D.

Not Europe, but very close, near the Bosphorus. The gunman was wearing a Santa costume.

According to some reports the nightclub was a higher end expat bar with a paid duty police officer and it's own armed in house security. The terrorists are getting bolder.  :(

My wife and I visited this club one trip to Istanbul. Very upscale joint on the water in a high end area of the city. Only for very wealthy locals driving lambos and tourists. Nice outdoor area on the water and expensive like some of the rooftop venues in Taksim.

Very nearly NOT Europe ;)

I never paid attention to where the club was - until I spotted this small geographic mistake... When I checked to see if it was on the European side, I realised I was there in September 2007 - during a conference night out

I can appreciate why it would be target .. Certainly VERY cosmo and trendy...  I felt old for the first time, that night :)

After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

Interesting, in that he is suggesting the long-term blaming of the west for it's actions by long-term western residing ex-pats.

Sort of suggests 'we' haven't made any mistakes - which - of course - we have.

I still maintain we can't let a small minority have 'us shut up shop' .. ''Political Islam' - what a misnomer - wants to promote hatred. polarisation and to disrupt society....

I don't think he is saying the West has no culpability, but rather, that blaming the West for the current problems in their countries is the easy way out, and they are minimizing or ignoring the role of political Islam in their countries.

Hi Boethius

Whilst I appreciate he suggests that many long-term 'ex-pats' still blame their new host nations  - I think they do have a point - to an extent. 'We' need to appreciate our mistakes - esp. Britain and France after the first world war - 'we' drew the maps that shape today's nations - often made up of many tribes / religions and shafted the Kurds. Iraq and Libya being examples- When freed of a dictator - they've split into those regions 'we' ignored.

Alienating those already settled in western nations is THE aim of the violent few - who know most security operations rely on locals giving info

The UK has hosted a large population of Irish people - who desired a united Ireland - Internment without trial - was a disastrous experiment and drove MORE young people to take up violence - even within the mainland UK.

'Lone wolf' attacks are now the desperate measure of the likes of so called 'IS', because they know that too many people in the loop will mean a deadly plot will fail. ...'We' are winning by trying to counter the 'BS' of those appealing to those willing to kill / be killed.

These people are a tiny minority and 'we' need to encourage folk to inform on potential 'lone wolf' terror attacks - not abandon the vast majority the chance of a better life.

'They' - ''Political 'Islam' " - WANT us to mistrust each other..

I agree they have a point to an extent.  Some believe that the terrorism we face now is because we (the West) have gone to war against Muslim nations and support dictatorial regimes.  al-Zawahiri certainly proselytized for bringing the fight to the America because the US funded Mubarek.  However, that does not change the fact that there is a radical component in Islam that has hundreds of thousands of supporters, and is well funded to spread radical ideas and hate.  We ignore it at our own peril.

What has the Queen having a heavy cold - something that can lead to far worse, if not careful at her age - got to do with the 'End of Europe' ? !

But to be clear - When the Queen passes - it will not be kept a secret.
