Donald Trump said on Tuesday that in return for the deal Ukraine would get "the right to fight on"

"What we know about the deal

As we've been reporting, a senior official in Kyiv has told the BBC that Ukraine has agreed the terms of a major minerals deal with the US.

We don't have much detail on that deal yet, but here's what we do know:

Media reports say Washington has dropped initial demands for a right to $500bn (£395bn) in potential revenue from accessing Ukraine's natural resources.

The same reports suggest the US has not given firm security guarantees to Ukraine - which has been their key demand.

Donald Trump said on Tuesday that in return for the deal Ukraine would get "the right to fight on", but didn't confirm if the US would continue supplying military equipment and ammunition.

The US president said he's expecting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington to sign the deal this week.

Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna, who has led the negotiations, told the Financial Times that the deal is "only part of the picture".

As a reminder, Ukraine holds huge deposits of critical elements and minerals, including lithium and titanium, as well as sizeable coal, gas, oil and uranium deposits - supplies worth billions of dollars."


So will Trump now be satisfied and not so bothered about reaching a peace deal with Putler for Ukraine? If Trump gets what he wants in the minerals deal then maybe that is all he wants and possibly now might drift off to other matters elsewhere in the world. We shall see. Whether Ukraine will get any new military funding as part of this deal remains to be seen. New US military funding from the US would be helpful to Ukraine and unhelpful to Putler of course. If Ukraine can fight on they would be best to do so as Russia has now run out of Armaments to successfully conduct any more Offensive campaigns in Ukraine. Ukraine just has to sit tight and hold it out now on their present front lines until the Russian economy collapses which will force Russia to pull out its troops from Ukraine.

Usually I am not so much a fan of Sturmer, but he seems to have the right thinking on Ukraine at least. That peace must not reward the aggressor. I agree it was an ambush by Vance & Trump in the White House. My guess is that it was already pre-decided by Trump and Vance to ambush Zelensky like that and go at him, with it pre-decided that Vance would kick off first then Trump would follow, 2 against 1.

I think Trump could see that the minerals deal with Zelensky would be problematic as it would then put US interests in the way of Russian interests. That wouldn't go down well with Putler and Putler had likely complained about it. So Trump had already decided before the meet with Zelensky that he had to torpedo the whole thing. Trump's chumyness with Putler obviously taking precedence here.

To be honest it sounds like no bad thing for Zelensky. He gets rid of the peace deal/capitulation arrangements being made and can move onto focusing on winning the war through continuing it until Russia is forced into giving up through it's economy failing. At some point US military aid will tail off from what the Biden administration gave but UK & EU support should be enough now against a Russia who is now starting to run out of Armaments and has an economy that increasingly can no longer support a war.
